Texas Bans Transgender Girls from Female Sports in Schools

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday signed into law a bill banning transgender girls from participating in female sports at public schools, joining a wave of similar measures emerging from Republican-controlled statehouses across the country, Premium Times reports.

According to the report, supporters of the bill, due to take effect on Jan. 18, say it is aimed at protecting fairness in school sports by eliminating what they see as an inherent physical competitive advantage of transgender athletes playing on female teams.

Equal rights advocates decry such restrictions as discriminatory, “hate”-based measures whose real purpose is to energize hard-core social conservatives, with little or no evidence that trans women or girls are dominating sports, the report stated further.

Greg Abbott, Texas Governor

SEB gathers that seven other states have passed similar laws this year, part of a Republican-led national campaign since Idaho in March 2020 barred athletes who were assigned a male gender at birth from competing on sports teams against those assigned as female in public schools or colleges.

Catch-Up: OAU

On Catch-Up this week we have our spotlight on the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a pride of many when educational institutions are mentioned across the globe.

The spotlight is designed to feature the Institution’s history and of course, its mission and vision statements.

The greatness and popularity of the Obafemi Awolowo University is by no means an accident. Founded in 1962 as the University of Ife but rechristened by the Federal Military Government as the Obafemi Awolowo University on May 12, 1987, in honour of one of its most distinguished founding fathers and eminent nationalist, politician, lawyer, stateman and former chancellor, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is one of three Universities established in Nigeria between 1961 and 1962 as a result of the report submitted to the Federal Government in September, 1960, by a Commission it appointed in April 1959 under the Chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College, Cambridge, to survey the needs of post-secondary and higher education in Nigeria over the next twenty years. On 8th June, 1961 the Law providing for the establishment of the Provisional Council of the University was formally inaugurated under the Chairmanship of Chief Rotimi Williams.

What’s happening to my one big feminine family?

I’m a beautiful nubile girl and almost like taking everything after my grandma I believed it was time I had a place for someone special in my heart. Yea, you know what I mean.

So, I got married to this charming gentleman without the slightest doubt about doing the right thing. Suddenly, like magic we started having the pretty young ones of our own.

But when I later turned around to dekko at the world around me I immediately realized I had no sisters in it. Majority of those who should be my sisters naturally share my characteristics in every way except one thing for certain – they never have the slightest desire for marriage. So, what’s happening to my one big feminine family?

Before praying to God for prosperity, you need to demonstrate to Him that you have self control - Reno

Reno Omokri sends a message to his followers via his IG: Before praying to God for prosperity, you need to demonstrate to Him that you have self control. Because, if God prospers you in your present state, without self control, you will just get money and excitedly buy something expensive that kills you. Always remember that the difference between who you are today and who you want to be tomorrow will be determined by what you do now. If you do the same things you did yesterday, tomorrow will come and meet you the same as today. No self development means no wealth development.

So, what's your take on this?

Wao! ‘Unprecedented’ Hunger in Lebanon as Fuel Crisis Hikes Food Costs

Mohammad sat in the smaller grocery store where he worked and flipped through the pages of a notebook, filled with a long list of customers indebted to the shop, Arise News reports.

“More and more people are struggling with money and asking us to let them pay later,” the 30-year-old Syrian refugee from Deraa told Al Jazeera, as a growing fuel crunch has led food prices to skyrocket.

“We have to try to be patient with them. Things have become much worse with the fuel crisis over the summer.”

According to the report, the small shop is located in the heart of Beirut’s semi-industrial Karantina neighbourhood, a stone’s throw away from the destroyed port, adding that many of the shelves at the shop were packed, but that is because people are simply focusing on household necessities, Mohammad said.

SEX APPEAL

Jeremiah meets with Mercy and falls in-love with her. “A beautiful gem of a lady”, he sings her praises round the clock. He finally succeeds in taking her home for the first time to have a long awaited romantic night. Arriving his apartment Mercy dashes into the rest-room for a quick bath. But after her bath, according to Jeremiah, the all-time beautiful lady he had met suddenly turned ugly. So what actually happened? Your guess is as good as mine.

‘SEX APPEAL’ is what you either have or you don’t, and no amount of ‘make-up’ can give it to you.

Make-ups can either embellish or mask. But more often than not ladies use it for the former. Some ladies overdo it to the point of masquerading the face.

THE BIG MISTAKE

NEWMAN is an arrogant fellow. He’s wretched and so are his parents. But his arrogance makes LULU, a local champion believe he’s comfortable and well connected. Afraid of having a rival in the person of Newman, Lulu immediately hires a thug to torture him as way of warning and to prove supremacy. But then the thug accidentally murders him in the process. Lulu soon finds out about the tragic death but shows no feelings until the thug finds out that the deceased was poor and came from a very wretched background. Lulu then believes Newman’s death was a big mistake.

Now, this is not a true life story. But if you were to do a resolution for this story what would it be? Yes, rack your brain on it guys.

CATCH-UP - Lipton Tea

On Catch-Up this week we are spotlighting on Lipton. Yes, that all-time-available pleasant tea most of us can’t do without.

Lipton is a British brand of tea, owned by Unilever. Lipton was also a supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, later sold to Argyll Foods, after which the company sold only tea. The company is named after its founder Sir Thomas Lipton. The Lipton ready-to-drink beverages are sold by "Pepsi Lipton International", a company jointly owned by Unilever and PepsiCo.

In 1871 Thomas Lipton (1848–1931) of Glasgow, Scotland used his small savings to open his own shop, and by the 1880s the business had grown to more than 200 shops. In 1929, the Lipton grocery retail business was one of the companies that merged with Home and Colonial Stores, Maypole Dairy Company, Vyes & Boroughs, Templetons, Galbraiths & Pearks to form a food group with more than 3,000 shops. The group traded in the high street under various names, but was registered on the UK stock market as Allied Suppliers. Lipton's became a supermarket chain focused on small towns. Allied was acquired by Argyll Foods in 1982; the supermarket business was rebranded as Presto during the 1980s.

Lipton produces instant soup mixes. In the 1950s in the United States, Lipton ran an advertisement campaign promoting French onion dip prepared at home using Lipton's French onion soup mix, thus helping to popularize chips and dip. Hundreds of new commercially produced varieties of dips were later introduced in the U.S.

AHMED JODA's exit and the northern autumn - Matthew Hassan Kukah

Ahmed Joda

A TRIBUTE BY:  Matthew Hassan Kukah

"... With Ahmed Joda gone, the north is at best now a huge graveyard. Its children are now largely orphans."

The death of Ahmed Joda marks the drop of the final leaves of the northern autumn. Ordinarily, in spring, the first drops of the rains and moisture breathe life into the foliage and in turn, a long process begins to ensure that fresh leaves return to the trees.

However, with the bandits and kidnappers having taken over the region, Northern Nigeria is faced with a prospect of self- immolation that is almost impossible to contemplate.

The region’s internal tensions commenced long ago with the death of the Gamji himself on January 15th, 1966. His rarified personage had dwarfed all around him and there were hardly any pretending deputies in sight. Everyone around the Sardauna was merely an altar server; no co-celebrants as such.

EDITORIAL: Electronic voting and transmission of results – the imperative to safeguard democracy

Our top editorial this moment comes from the Premium Times with a message in view of the seemingly much awaited Nigeria’s 2023 Elections and a deserving voting pattern. The story reads:

As the Conference Committee of the National Assembly begins harmonising the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, PREMIUM TIMES deems it necessary to reiterate the need to pass an electoral law that would fully accommodate both electronic voting and the electronic transmission of results. We are firmly convinced that such step would safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

The main purpose of the Conference Committee is to reconcile the two versions of the Amendment Bill as respectively passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

A MESSAGE TO NIGERIAN CHRISTIANS – Femi Emmanuel

-          We have prayed enough and God has answered our prayers.

-          God answered our prayers by giving us large followership.

-          Mega churches in Nigeria are not available anywhere in the world.

-          No church like Redeem … in the world.

-          No church like Winners … in the world.

-          No church like Mountain of Fire … in the world.

-          No church like Chosen … in the world.

-          No church like Christ Embassy … in the world.

-          No church like Deeper Life … in the world.

-          Redeem alone has over 40,000 parishes.

-          Winners alone has over 30,000 parishes.

We have prayed enough and God has answered! The church should wake up, rise up and start playing their part in building a better Nigeria. We have the number, we have the resources, we have everything we need to repair Nigeria from the grassroots. The time to start is now!

This message was delivered by Pastor Femi Emmanuel, Presiding Pastor of Livingspring Chapel International while addressing his congregation as Nigeria marks her 61st Independence Anniversary.

Calling on Nigerian Christians to partake in politics from the grassroots, Pastor Femi has equally asked them to change their prayer modes.

“So, it’s not just ‘deliver Nigeria, Deliver Nigeria’, he said. “It should be called ‘Wake up your church’.

“Talk to your General Overseers. The church community is an imprisoned community. Our General Overseers have imprisoned us. They must release us, mobilize us, encourage us to go to the grass root. Politics is in the grassroots”, he added.

Thousands of Haitians prepare to trek through Panama's jungle and on to the U.S.

Haitian migrants in Necoclí, Colombia, walk toward boats that will take them to the town of Acandí, across the Gulf of Urabá. The boats can't keep up with the number of Haitians looking to travel from Colombia through the jungle to Panama to eventually reach the U.S.

Carlos Villalón for NPR

NECOCLÍ, Colombia — This town's Caribbean beaches used to fill up with tourists but there's no longer room. Instead, thousands of Haitian migrants who can't afford the hotels have pitched tents on just about every patch of sand, National Public Radio (NPR) reports.

According to the report, Nearly 20,000 Haitians, who are on their way to the United States, are now holed up in Necoclí, forming a human bottleneck even bigger than the recent migrant logjams on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Tents pitched at Necocli's beach in September. About 19,000 migrants are living in the town, some staying in hotels and many other camping out on the beach.
Carlos Villalon for NPR

Bruno Noel got to Necoclí two weeks ago with his wife and 6-month-old son and notes his many compatriots speaking Haitian Creole on the boardwalk. "This is like a smaller version of Haiti," he quips, the report states further adding that Lacking visas, Noel and other Haitians are taking a roundabout, overland route to get to the U.S. Many moved to Brazil, Chile and other South American nations following Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake. But now that countries in the region have eased pandemic travel restrictions, throngs of Haitians are heading north. Many believe they will have a better chance to get into the U.S. — and to stay there — now that Donald Trump has been replaced in the White House by President Biden.

811m people are hungry, appeal against food wastage - UN

The UN food agency has launched an urgent appeal for action to reduce the amount of food that is wasted, saying lack of food, hunger and malnutrition affect every country in the world, NAN reports.

According to the report, The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on Tuesday that 17 per cent of all food available to consumers in 2019 ended up being thrown away.

An additional 132 million people face food and nutrition insecurity today because of the COVID-19 pandemic, FAO said, ahead of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, on Wednesday, 29 September.

The problem of food waste is a global one and not limited to wealthy nations alone, said Nancy Aburto, Deputy Director of FAO’s Food and Nutrition Division Economic and Social Development Stream, speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition are impacting every country in the world and no country is unaffected; 811 million people suffer hunger, two billion suffer micronutrient deficiencies – that’s vitamin and mineral deficiencies – and millions of children suffer stunting and wasting, deadly forms of under-nutrition.”

SPECIAL REPORT: Inside Nigeria’s worsening kidnap-for-ransom scourge

A study of reported cases of Kidnap-for-ransom in the media reveals that the crime has become perhaps the biggest security threat in Nigeria.

Tears dropped down the cheeks of Catherine Ukpekpi as she narrated her family’s ordeal. It was April and her husband, Ben, the leader of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Cross River State, had been kidnapped four weeks earlier. It was the second time in 16 months that he had been kidnapped.

Mrs Ukpekpi said the circumstances of both incidents were identical. Just as in December 2019, he was again abducted at the front of their house in Calabar, and by people she suspected were the same.

“Two days later they opened communication and said we should pay N150 million before they release my husband. I asked them N150,000 or N150 million? They said ‘madam N150 million! We abducted your husband for money. Pay us N150 million, not a kobo less. He is the NLC chairman’”.
