PDP Confirms Death of Bayelsa Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo
The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed the death of Bayelsa
State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oboraw-Harievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who
reportedly collapsed and passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves across Bayelsa State and the wider political community in Nigeria, as he was regarded as a loyal party member and a politician of principle.
In a
statement issued by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong,
under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the party described Ewhrudjakpo’s
passing as devastating and deeply painful. The PDP emphasized that he was a
trusted and faithful member whose political career was anchored on conviction,
integrity, and strength of character. The party noted that he practiced
politics with principle rather than convenience, and remained consistent in his
beliefs until his final moments.
The
Bayelsa State government has not yet released an official statement regarding
his death, but the PDP has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and
people of Bayelsa State, praying for eternal rest for his soul. The party
highlighted that his loss has left its members, particularly in Bayelsa, in
profound grief.
Ewhrudjakpo
had served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State since 2020, under Governor Douye
Diri. He was first selected as Diri’s running mate in the November 2019
governorship election and was retained when the duo secured reelection in 2023.
His tenure was marked by loyalty to the PDP, even as Governor Diri defected to
the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October 2025.
Ewhrudjakpo
notably chose to remain in the PDP, a decision that led to political tension
and an alleged impeachment plot by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. He had
approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to restrain the Assembly from
pursuing the impeachment, underscoring his determination to stand by his party
affiliation despite mounting pressure.
His
absence during Governor Diri’s defection was widely noted, and Diri himself
publicly stated that he would not compel Ewhrudjakpo to join the APC,
acknowledging his deputy’s right to political independence.
This
episode highlighted Ewhrudjakpo’s steadfastness and his reputation as a
politician who valued principle over expediency.
The news
of his death has been met with widespread sorrow, with many describing him as a
hero of political integrity. His passing marks the end of a career defined by
loyalty, conviction, and service to Bayelsa State.
The PDP’s
tribute reflects the depth of loss felt within the party and across the state,
as Bayelsa mourns a leader whose political journey was characterized by honesty
and consistency.
