From Pro-Sound Network comes a report about artistes making hits from home.
Traditionally, according to the report, ''musicians would go to a recording studio to make their hits, which would be kitted out with all the instruments and technology needed. However, technology became more accessible about 50 years ago and some of the most successful musicians ever were able to build full studios in their homes, a trend that continues today. Even more recently, music-making technology has basically become accessible to basically anyone with a smartphone or laptop (although you arguably are more limited this way)''.
See in pictures below, the world's biggest musicians making hits from home:
Lady Gaga
Gaga has a 'studio house' in Hollywood where she records a lot. It's worth over US$5 million.
Kanye West
West is well known for recording and producing everywhere he goes. He started recording as a child in his mother's house in Chicago. There are even videos on YouTube of the rapper working on music on his laptop while flying economy.
Taylor Swift
'Folklore: the long pond studio sessions' (2020) on Disney+ follows Swift recording her album 'Folklore' during lockdown at home when recording studios were closed.
Paul McCartney
McCartney built a home studio on a property he owned in Campbeltown in Scotland in the late 1960s where he recorded a lot of his first solo records and later hits, too.
Alicia Keys
Keys isn't just a world-class songwriter and singer–she's also a producer. She's become well accustomed to working on music on her laptop at home and elsewhere when she's not at her studio in Manhattan.
George Harrison
Harrison recorded a lot of his solo albums from his home recording studio too, including 'Living in a Material World.'
Drake
The rapper has a huge mansion in his Toronto home with a fully kitted recording studio where he gets his groove on.
John Mayer
Mayer has been handing out hits for decades and is no stranger to doing it from home.
Ed Sheeran
Sheeran is such a prolific songwriter that he basically has set up to record wherever he goes. In 'Songwriter' (2018), a documentary that follows him on tour, he even has a studio set up on his tour bus where he writes and records a demo of 'Love Yourself' (which was later given to Justin Bieber).
Liam Payne
The One Direction singer had a fully kitted recording studio in his mansion in Calabasas, California.
Meghan Trainor
Trainor has a mansion in LA with a recording studio where she makes her catchy pop hits.
Sheryl Crow
Crow has a recording studio built on her 50-acre estate in Nashville where she bashes out tunes.
Billie Joe Armstrong
The Green Day front man's home recording studio was where the band created a large amount of their music during their 'American Idiot' era.
Neil Young
Neil Young has always been a DIY musician. Documentaries from decades ago even show him recording albums like 'Harvest Moon' out in the countryside in his home studio (which was in a barn).
Courtney Love
Love is apparently pretty hands-on with her music and records a lot of demos from home.
Twenty One Pilots
Twenty One Pilots vocalist Tyler Joseph took fans on a tour of his home recording studio on social media.
The Black Keys
The Black Keys was born after Dan Auerbach visited Patrick Carney to jam and record in Carney's parents' basement, where he had some recording equipment and a drum kit. Auerbach brought his guitar. They liked the recordings and sent them out to labels and venues, and the rest is history.
Charlie Puth
Charlie Puth produces most of his hits from the comfort of his own home studio.
Calvin Harris
Harris, as an electronic music producer, produces a lot from his laptop. The majority of his early music was produced from his bedroom.
Jack White
White's entire existence has pretty much been recording and playing music, recording music at home as soon as the technology became available to him. When he was a young boy growing up in Detroit, he moved the bed out of his room to fit a drum kit in and slept on the floor.
Missy Elliott
Missy Elliott isn't smashing it as much as she used to in the charts in recent years because she's chosen to take on the role of a producer. She's rumored to do a lot from home on her laptop.
Hunter Hayes
The country star has a studio built for himself in his home in the hills above Los Angeles.
Skrillex
The type of music that Skrillex makes doesn't require acoustic instruments, so he's just been smashing out hits on his laptop for the past decade.
Taio Cruz
Cruz created hits for himself and other artists (including Nick Jonas) in his Beverly Hills home recording studio.
Jimmy Page
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page took to recording in a scaled-back home studio in his later years, recording with drum machines and guitars for movie soundtracks.
Tame Impala
Kevin Parker, who is the writer, singer, and producer of all of the Tame Impala music, is famous for recording all of the music from the comfort of his home.
Jeff Beck
Rolling Stones guitarist Jeff Beck had one of the very first portable four-track recorders, which he had when he was with the Yardbirds.
