Nigeria’s President Commissions $350m World Class African Medical Centre of Excellence

Nigeria’s Medical and Nursing School: A New Era for Healthcare or a Cause for Concern?

Nigeria has taken a significant step toward improving its healthcare system with the commissioning of a Medical and Nursing School at the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE). Developed in partnership with King’s College London and the University of Wisconsin, the institution is expected to train world-class medical specialists, reduce brain drain, and enhance healthcare accessibility. While many celebrate the development as a breakthrough for Nigeria’s healthcare industry, concerns remain about its impact on affordability, accessibility, and inclusivity.

A Promising Leap Forward

The launch of the Medical and Nursing School has sparked widespread enthusiasm, with many Nigerians viewing it as a transformational project for the country’s healthcare sector. The school aims to:

  • Train and retain highly skilled medical professionals, reducing reliance on foreign institutions.
  • Serve as a regional hub for medical education, strengthening Nigeria’s role in global healthcare research.
  • Foster local expertise, ensuring that African doctors and nurses receive top-tier training without leaving the continent.

TINUBU’S TWO-YEAR REVIEW – A CONCERN?

Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu

Given the article captioned “Tinubu’s two-year review stirs fresh political firestorm”, curtesy The Punch, (read it here) , the SEB Team at this time is delighted to take the topic further in your best interest. The article reviews President Bola Tinubu's first two years in office, highlighting both criticisms and defenses of his administration's performance:

Key Points:

1.   Criticisms from Opposition: Political opponents, including Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), argue that Tinubu's government has worsened economic hardship, increased national debt, failed to control insecurity, and neglected transparency.

2.   Economic Challenges: Policies such as the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange unification are blamed for food inflation, rising costs of living, and business struggles. Critics accuse the government of excessive borrowing, pushing Nigeria into deeper debt.

3.   Security Concerns: The opposition claims that insecurity has worsened under Tinubu, with more Nigerians affected by terrorist attacks and kidnappings.

4.   Defense from APC: The All Progressives Congress (APC) dismisses the criticism as politically motivated, stating that Tinubu’s reforms are necessary for long-term recovery and have already shown positive impact.

So, given the very import of the topic the SEB Team deemed it necessary to take the conversation further in your best interest.

The video (watch it here) discusses the ongoing crisis within Nigeria's opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The conflict has intensified between factions loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. Wike has withdrawn from reconciliation efforts, blaming Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for the turmoil. Meanwhile, the PDP national secretariat in Abuja was sealed by officials over unpaid ground rent, which the party claims is a political move by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine democracy.

The Trump administration on Monday asked a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that takes aim at the abortion pill mifepristone – a move that stunned many observers for what seemed a defense of the drug by a president who has overseen the most dramatic rollback of abortion rights in modern US history.

Guardian reports that at first blush, it may seem a victory for abortion access – but experts worry that, in reality, the move preserves the administration’s ability to play coy about any future plans to attack abortion rights.

Taraba varsity lecturer writes Tinubu, calls for ban on open grazing - Punch reports

President Bola Tinubu

A lecturer at Taraba State University, Professor John Ajai, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review Nigeria’s commitment to the ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol and fast-track the enactment of a national law banning open grazing across the country.

Punch reports that Ajai made the call in an open letter addressed to the President on Sunday, where he warned that the country was facing a “defining moment” that demands bold executive action to protect national sovereignty, security, and unity.

According to him, the ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol, which was originally intended to facilitate pastoral mobility across West Africa, has worsened insecurity, encouraged violent land occupation by armed groups, and undermined Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
