Lagos State Government Seals Supermarkets Over Single-Use Plastics Ban
On
October 29, 2025, the Lagos State Government intensified its environmental
enforcement efforts by sealing three supermarkets in the Kosofe Local
Government Area for violating the state's ban on single-use plastics (SUPs).
This action is part of a broader campaign aimed at curbing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable waste management practices across the state.
The
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the
enforcement via an online statement, emphasizing the government's commitment to
a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
According to Wahab, Winny Supermarket was sealed and all single-use plastic materials were confiscated due to non-compliance.
Similarly, Afia Supermarket located at
Tipper Garage in Ketu and Beyond Tastee2Go Restaurant on Ogudu Road in Ojota
were also shut down after repeated warnings were ignored.
This
crackdown follows the Lagos State Government’s official ban on single-use
plastics, which was implemented to address the environmental hazards posed by
indiscriminate plastic disposal. Over the years, residents have frequently
dumped SUPs illegally, leading to clogged drainage systems and contributing
significantly to flooding across the state.
The
government’s enforcement teams have been deployed to various locations to
ensure strict adherence to the ban and to encourage businesses to adopt
eco-friendly alternatives.
Commissioner
Wahab reiterated that the goal of the initiative is to safeguard public health
and protect the environment, aligning with the administration’s vision for a
#CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos. He urged all businesses operating within the
state to transition to sustainable packaging solutions, warning that
enforcement will continue and non-compliant establishments will face similar
sanctions.
The
sealing of these supermarkets marks a significant step in Lagos State’s
environmental reform agenda, reflecting a growing urgency to tackle pollution
and climate-related challenges through policy and action.
