Canada Rolls Out Express Entry Pathway For Migrant Doctors

Canada Rolls Out Express Entry Pathway for Migrant Doctors

In December 2025, Canada announced a landmark immigration initiative designed to address the country’s persistent physician shortages and strengthen its healthcare system.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed that beginning in early 2026, a new dedicated Express Entry category will be introduced specifically for international doctors.

This pathway is aimed at physicians already in Canada on a temporary basis who have contributed to patient care and accumulated at least one year of eligible Canadian work experience within the past three years.

The program represents a significant policy shift, offering migrant doctors a clear route to permanent residence. By doing so, Canada hopes to stabilize its healthcare workforce and ensure reliable access to medical services across the country.

The government has also reserved 5,000 federal admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors with job offers.

These reserved spots are distinct from existing Provincial Nominee Program allocations and come with expedited 14-day work permit processing while permanent residence applications are underway.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader mandate to attract global talent and fill critical labor shortages. She noted that practice-ready doctors are essential to ensuring Canadians receive the care they need.

Similarly, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, Maggie Chi, highlighted that increasing the number of qualified physicians is vital for improving access to timely, high-quality healthcare nationwide.

This policy is particularly significant for Nigerian doctors and other international physicians seeking opportunities abroad.

With Canada’s healthcare system facing mounting pressure due to workforce gaps, the new pathway offers both a solution for the country and a chance for skilled professionals to secure long-term stability.

By working closely with provinces and territories, the Canadian government aims to tackle workforce challenges head-on, ensuring that healthcare delivery remains robust and accessible for all citizens.

In summary, the Express Entry pathway for migrant doctors marks a strategic move by Canada to attract and retain medical talent, bridging critical gaps in its healthcare system while offering international physicians a promising future.
