Anthony Placid Replaces Benjamin Hundeyin as Force Spokesman

In a significant development within Nigeria’s police hierarchy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anthony Okon Placid has been appointed as the new Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), succeeding Benjamin Hundeyin.

The announcement was made on March 8, 2026, by outgoing spokesman Hundeyin, marking a new chapter in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force’s communications arm.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, approved Placid’s appointment shortly after assuming office as Nigeria’s police chief. This reshuffle reflects the broader restructuring within the force under Disu’s leadership.

Hundeyin, who had served as FPRO since September 2015, was originally appointed by former IGP Kayode Egbetokun and had previously held the role of spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command.

Anthony Placid, born on December 2, 1970, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, hails from Mbiokporo Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. He holds a degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Uyo and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (M.A.L.D.) from the University of Jos. Additionally, he studied law at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Placid began his police career as a cadet assistant superintendent at the Police Academy, Kano, in 1996 and was commissioned in August 1998. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a seasoned officer with expertise in administration, intelligence, operations, training, and international peacekeeping.

His professional development includes specialized training in United Nations Peace Operations, leadership and peacebuilding courses, and certifications in police studies, military studies, gender awareness, humanitarian law, and civilian protection.

Placid has served in various strategic capacities both within Nigeria and internationally. His career reflects a blend of operational command, administrative leadership, and global peacekeeping experience.

These roles have positioned him as a versatile officer capable of handling the complex demands of police communications and public relations.

Beyond his professional commitments, Placid is described as happily married with children. His hobbies include listening to music, playing football, basketball, table tennis, and badminton, as well as engaging with people, traits that suggest a personable and approachable character suited for his new role.

The appointment of Anthony Okon Placid as Force Spokesman signals continuity and renewal within the Nigeria Police Force’s leadership. His extensive background in law, diplomacy, and peacekeeping, combined with his operational experience, positions him to effectively manage the force’s public image and communication strategies.

As Nigeria’s police chief, IGP Disu, continues to implement reforms, Placid’s role will be pivotal in shaping public perception and fostering trust between the police and the citizenry.
