INEC Registers Two New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially registered two new political parties, expanding Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

This announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, during the Commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political party leaders ealier today in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The newly recognized parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Their registration brings the total number of political parties in Nigeria to 21, marking a significant development in the country’s democratic process.

Professor Amupitan emphasized that 2026 represents a critical phase of heightened electoral activity, as preparations intensify for the 2027 polls. He cautioned that persistent internal leadership crises within political parties pose a serious threat to democratic consolidation.

According to him, the Commission expects all stakeholders to demonstrate commitment and preparedness in order to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.  

The registration of these parties reflects INEC’s ongoing efforts to broaden political participation and ensure inclusivity in Nigeria’s electoral system.

However, the Commission also reiterated its warning that political parties must resolve internal disputes and maintain organizational discipline to avoid undermining the credibility of the electoral process. 

This development a more competitive political environment as Nigeria approaches the 2027 General Elections, with the newly registered parties expected to contribute fresh perspectives and potentially reshape the dynamics of political contestation in the country.
