In a nation battered by sectarian violence and political complacency, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has once again stepped into its role as the moral conscience of society.

On 26 August 2026, the Bishops issued a resounding condemnation of the attack on Muslim worshippers in Borgu, Niger State, where over 60 faithful were abducted, alongside the massacre in Ukum, Benue State that claimed 47 lives and left 17 critically wounded.

The statement, signed by CBCN President Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, was more than a routine denunciation of violence. It was a deliberate act of solidarity with Muslim compatriots, a reminder that the prophetic mandate of the Church transcends creed and dogma.

By rallying behind victims in a mosque, the Bishops dismantled the sectarian lens through which insecurity is often filtered, declaring unequivocally that an assault on any place of worship is an assault on humanity itself.

The Bishops extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved in Benue while demanding the immediate release of the abducted worshippers in Niger State. Quoting Genesis 4:10, “The blood of your brother cries out to me from the ground,” they underscored that no political, ethnic, or religious justification can ever legitimize such cruelty.

Their intervention was not only pastoral but prophetic, insisting that whether violence strikes in a mosque, church, market, or home, the trauma inflicted requires an unwavering response to restore justice and safety.

Acknowledging government efforts, the Bishops nonetheless warned against complacency. They urged political leaders and security chiefs to adopt intelligence-driven operations that neutralize criminal hubs before they strike, and demanded swift prosecution of perpetrators to break the cycle of impunity.

Addressing the attackers directly, they invoked Galatians 6:7: “God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows,” warning bandits and kidnappers to lay down their arms before divine judgment overtakes them.

By standing shoulder to shoulder with Muslim worshippers, the Catholic Bishops have offered Nigeria a rare beacon of unity. Their message is clear: true faith defends the sanctity of human life, not only within the walls of the Church but across the breadth of humanity.

In a fractured nation, their moral leadership provides hope that solidarity, compassion, and justice can still triumph over darkness.
