Some of the country's highways were
built through existing Black and brown communities. President Biden's
infrastructure plan aims to address racial inequities. Richard Baker/Corbis via Getty Images |
In his $2 trillion plan to improve
America's infrastructure, President Biden is promising to address the racism
ingrained in historical transportation and urban planning.
Biden's plan includes $20 billion for a program that would "reconnect neighborhoods cut off by historic investments," according to the White House. It also looks to target "40 percent of the benefits of climate and clean infrastructure investments to disadvantaged communities."
Planners of the interstate highway system, which began to take shape after the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, routed some highways directly, and sometimes purposefully, through Black and brown communities. In some instances, the government took homes by eminent domain.
My beloved people of Imo State, I bring you warm felicitations on this glorious occasion of Easter The Easter season marks the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is the root of Christianity.
That glorious resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday is the everlasting emblem of the triumph of love over hate, of light over darkness. Most importantly the events of Easter comfort us with the assurance of a secured pathway to our salvation.
As we celebrate Easter, our faith is strengthened because it reminds us that Christ died on the cross for our sake, because he loves us. As Christ himself said; what other love is greater than this... that a man should die for his friends.
Therefore we should rejoice and be glad, for Christ, our Lord has risen in glory, after paying the supreme sacrifice of shedding his blood, for our sake.
However, as we celebrate, we should ponder awhile and soberly reflect on the power of this love that made Christ to die for us. With such love, we can build a kinder and more inclusive society where love defines how we relate with each other.
Let us, therefore, resolve during this Easter celebration to truly love our country and our state by thinking more of what we can do to make our country and our state better, than thinking more of what we can get out from country and state.
Sacrifice is the pillar of love. Therefore as true Christians, we must be prepared, to make sacrifices for the good of our neighbour and the larger society.
On behalf Myself, Ayabas, Princes and Princesses, Oyomesi, Oyo people home and abroad, I His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, (J.P, C.F.R, LL.D, S.A.P, D.LITT), Iku Baba Yeye, Alaafin of Oyo, The Permanent Chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs and the Grand Custodian of Yoruba Culture and Tradition most heartily felicitate with all Christian faithfuls on this Easter day celebration where we join the world to celebrate the only man and son of God who according to the Gospel was crucified and he rose and ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of God the reason for Easter.
