Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba

Though we oppose open Police industrial action, we fear that the sack of the proposed strike’s ringleaders will worsen situations within the Force and the system as a whole. It will only lead the rest of the personnel to bottle up their feelings and impose the peace of the graveyard.

What an irony that the same police personnel sent to quell the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2021 are now left to protest for themselves over their poor conditions of service! It is now obvious that the measures the Presidency and Police authorities took to “appease” the #EndSARS protesters in terms of police welfare made no meaningful impact.

These failures in law enforcement, security, education, health and economic outlook must be halted. All efforts to reform the Police in the past 30 years have failed woefully. Officers now fend for themselves with their weapons. Since the Federal Government has lost its capacity to adequately cater for its Police Force, state policing can help. It is not too late to explore that option.

The headwinds arising from the global economic crisis have hit Nigeria hard. The productive sectors are having a rough ride. Agriculture, mining and manufacturing are typically high job-creating sectors but suffer from the prevailing adverse operating environment. There is also the energy crisis, featuring high diesel, power and lubricant costs.

Experts acknowledge that a large army of unemployed youths is dangerous to any society. The United States Bureau of Labour Statistics says high unemployment degrades the economy by depressing demand for goods and services and thereby reducing productive output.

Besides, idle, angry youths can take to crime or explode in violent protests. For instance, said Bugaje, “There is a group of unemployed youths springing up in Kano. They are called the ‘anarchists.’ They say they have been abandoned by the government and therefore they would be destroying all government installations they come across. It is a small group for now, but we need to take action now before the group grows and becomes another serious security threat to the country.” There may be more such angry youth groups across the country.

The kidney is one of the crucial organs of the human body, and a warning rang out from one of Nigerian experts for fellow citizens to beware. The director of the University of Ilorin Health Services, Dr. Rasheed Odunola advised Nigerians who watch their urines. Not just the colour, but its foaminess. If it foams, go for a check, it could be evidence of a kidney disease.

According to him, if it happens on a regular basis, it may be a warning signal and it could indicate that the organ may be leaking protein in the urine.

The value of kidney, two bean-shaped organs in the abdomen, can be understated for any person’s general well-being.
