“According to America’s National Center for Biotechnology Information, children inherit pairs of genes from their parents. A child gets one set of genes from the father and one set from the mother. These genes can match up in many ways to make different combinations. This is why many family members look a lot alike and others don’t look like each other at all but, each of them will exhibit certain traits from their parents.
“Meanwhile,
in the African context, we are more likely to attribute a child’s good outcome
to God and the bad outcome to the devil. But that’s just a mixed philosophy,
because God has never descended to homes in his effort to raise or train a
child, rather, he will always utilize the human medium (parents / guardians) to
raise them.
“While the Internet fraudster popularly known as Yahoo boys are busy killing their lovers for money rituals, the young ladies have lost their sense of morality on ticktock and other social media platforms, dressing naked to attract prospective followers.
“Growing
up, I heard the saying that, “it takes a village to raise a child”. By
implication, it means that a child will always be a product of his or her
parental upbringing, who are incidentally the foremost stakeholders in the
community as it concerns raising their child.
“… raising
a child/ward is more like a self-reflection because what they will eventually
become will always reflect certain attributes and characteristics of their
parents or guardian.
“I am
advising parents to live what they want to see in their kids, because your
children are growing to look like you in stature and attributes, and they are
more likely going to grow up to be like you in character, charisma, behavior,
and philosophy”

“NIGERIANS
are brilliant, one of the best educated peoples in the world. But none of us
can show our children or grandchildren the spot where, 63 years ago, our
country’s independence was declared. The spot where the iniquitous colonial
British flag was lowered and the Nigerian Green-White-Green independence flag
was hoisted to proclaim the birth of the most populous Black Nation in the
world.
“That spot
is buried under the concrete of our leaders’ lack of historical sense and
greed. This spot, which is on Lagos Island, was known as the Race Course. You
get it: where races, including those of humans and horses, were held. It was
the place for parades, including those by school children and the military. It
was the centre for ceremonies where we annually marked Independence Day”

“Marriage
is full of ups and downs, however, love and understanding have the capacity to
recognise individual strength and make room for shortcomings too.
“… knowing
when to walk away from arguments before they escalate is understanding that
everyone’s perspective matters rather than proving who is wrong or right.
Accepting that there is strength in valuing and embracing your differences can
have a positive impact on your relationship in the long run and allow you to
focus more on your common goals as a couple.
“The irony
about marriage is the mystery behind self-control, which is an essential skill
needed to navigate challenging situations with a spouse or difficult in-laws.
Self-control can be taught as a child through parents who are systematic and
able to regulate their own emotions and behaviours as caregivers. The ability
to regulate your feelings and desires is crucial in building a healthy
relationship with your spouse and your family, especially when you realise that
the in-laws you disrespected or relegated when your marriage was still fresh
and rosy may someday be the glue that will hold your marriage together during
challenging times”
