PDP Sets Stage for 2025 National Convention as Stakeholders Rally Behind Revival Agenda
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially announced its 2025 Elective National Convention will be held on November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, signaling a major step in its efforts to reposition itself ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The decision was reached during the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where party leaders and stakeholders pledged renewed unity, discipline, and momentum.
Party Cohesion Restored
The NEC expressed satisfaction over the
resolution of long-standing internal disputes that had fragmented the party.
According to a communiqué delivered by National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo
Ologunagba, PDP members demonstrated “patriotic disposition” by recommitting
themselves to party ideals and democratic values, affirming the PDP’s role as
Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
Convention Preparations
Underway
NEC approved a detailed schedule of activities
and established committees, including the Convention
Planning Committee and Zoning
Committee, tasked with ensuring a transparent and credible
convention. Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum and National
Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu were mandated to officially inform the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in compliance with electoral
guidelines.
Legal Push Against Defections
In an assertive move, NEC directed the
party’s National Working Committee to initiate legal action against elected
lawmakers who defected while still holding PDP mandates. Citing Sections
68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of Nigeria’s Constitution, the NEC claims defectors have
“irredeemably lost their seats,” and vowed to reclaim them through court
proceedings.
Strategic Signals &
Regional Influence
The choice of Ibadan as the host city is
widely interpreted as a tactical decision aimed at re-engaging voters in the Southwest, a region critical to Nigeria's
electoral calculus. Analysts suggest the PDP is seeking to rebuild trust and
establish a stronger foothold in this politically influential area.
Public Sentiment & Party
Morale
Reactions from party insiders and political
observers have been cautiously hopeful:
· Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara voiced
optimism that the convention would welcome back defectors and attract fresh
support.
· Senator Ahmed Makarfi warned
members to maintain decorum, emphasizing that the outcome of the convention
“will redefine the political landscape.”
· Members of the PDP Governors’ Forum reiterated their
commitment, with Senator Bala Mohammed noting the party’s resilience and warning against a
repeat of past indiscipline.
Despite recent defections and failed meeting
attempts, the turnout at the 101st NEC was seen as a strong sign of party
revival. Leaders stressed the importance of loyalty and unity, with some
suggesting this moment could reignite the PDP’s relevance in Nigeria’s
political future.
Last Line
The 102nd NEC meeting is scheduled for August 25, 2025, and
expectations are high. PDP’s success in conducting a credible and inspiring
convention may prove pivotal in challenging the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC) come 2027.
