Texas Flood Tragedy Claims Lives of Beloved Coach and Wife; Children Still Missing
Kerrville,
Texas
— A
heart-wrenching chapter has unfolded in Kerr County after record-breaking
floods swept through the Texas Hill Country, leaving devastation and heartbreak
in their wake. Among the lives claimed were Reece
Zunker, a revered soccer coach and
math teacher at Kerrville Tivy High School, and his wife, Paula Zunker.
The couple was reported missing early Friday morning when surging floodwaters engulfed their home. By Saturday, their bodies were found, prompting an outpouring of grief from the community they served so deeply. Their two young children remain missing, and frantic search efforts continue.
A Vigil Turns Into a Memorial
What
began as a hopeful prayer vigil at the Kerrville
Church of Christ on Saturday
transformed into a somber memorial as the Zunkers’ parents announced the
devastating news. Youth and Family Minister Ricky
Pruitt, whose son had played for
Coach Zunker, captured the shared sorrow, saying, “What started out as a prayer
vigil turned into a time of comforting one another and giving witness to two
lives of wonderful people.”
Community in Mourning
The
impact of Reece and Paula's loss has rippled far beyond the soccer pitch.
Reece, who joined Kerrville ISD in 2012,
was not only the mastermind behind the revitalization of Tivy High School’s soccer
program but also a mentor and role model.
- Tivy Boys Soccer paid tribute on social
media: “Coach Reece Zunker was
not just a soccer coach, he was a mentor, teacher, and a role model... His
passion for his players, students, co-workers, community, and his family
will never be forgotten.”
- Former student-athletes like
Jonathan Ellington called Zunker’s influence “unfathomable” and
described him as a father figure to his team.
- Friends and colleagues
shared heartfelt memories on social media, praising Zunker's unwavering
dedication and warmth. Former teacher Mario
Estrada described him as “a true
friend” and “an amazing father.”
Rising Toll and Unyielding Rescue
Efforts
The death
toll from the floods has climbed to at least 51, including 15 children, according to local officials. Among the missing are 27 children from a summer camp reportedly washed away.
Search
operations persist across the region, but worsening weather forecasts, including
a 70% chance of rain, may impede progress. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has
signed a federal disaster declaration to
mobilize additional resources for the affected communities.
This
tragedy has cast a long shadow over Kerrville and beyond. Yet, in the tributes
and memories shared, the legacy of Reece and Paula Zunker endures, a legacy of
leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others. The community now
clings to hope for the safe return of their children and all others still
unaccounted for.
