Kano Government Demands Ganduje’s Arrest Over ‘Inciting’ Security Comments

The political atmosphere in Kano State has taken a dramatic turn following the state government’s call for the arrest and investigation of former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The demand was made during the 34th Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Kano, where members reviewed recent remarks attributed to Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

The controversy stems from statements suggesting that Kano was increasingly vulnerable to banditry, coupled with disclosures about plans to recruit 12,000 personnel into a proposed religious police outfit known as Khairul Nas.

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described these remarks as “dangerous, inciting, and reckless,” warning that they could undermine ongoing security interventions by both state and federal authorities.

The government’s concern deepened when, less than 48 hours after the comments were made, suspected bandits infiltrated border communities in the state. This incident raised suspicions about whether Ganduje’s statements were premeditated or linked to the attack. The commissioner emphasized that the former governor must be investigated to prevent any attempt to destabilize peace in Kano.

In its official stance, the Kano State Executive Council reaffirmed gratitude to the Federal Government and security agencies for their continued support in combating insecurity. It stressed that no individual or group would be permitted to establish an illegal militia under any guise.

The Council also urged political figures and public office holders to avoid making statements capable of inciting unrest, assuring residents of its commitment to sustaining peace, law, and order across the state.

This development marks a significant escalation in Kano’s political and security discourse, placing Ganduje at the center of a heated debate about responsibility, rhetoric, and the fragile balance of peace in northern Nigeria.
