A Sacred Culmination at Durumi
Yesterday, the Catholic Secretariat in Durumi, Abuja, became the spiritual epicenter of Nigeria’s Catholic community as the First Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) for 2026 drew to a close with a solemn Mass.
The week-long gathering, themed “The Common Good and Leadership in Nigeria,” was not merely an ecclesiastical formality but a profound reflection on the Church’s prophetic role in guiding a nation at a crossroads.
The closing liturgy was a fitting conclusion to days of intense dialogue, prayer, and discernment. Presided over by senior bishops, the Mass brought together clergy, religious, lay faithful, and dignitaries who had journeyed with the bishops through discussions on justice, peace, and governance.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, alongside Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, President of the CBCN, and Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, underscored the Church’s responsibility to speak truth to power while nurturing hope among the faithful.
The homilies and prayers resonated with urgency, reminding leaders and citizens alike that the pursuit of the common good must transcend personal ambition and partisan divides.
The bishops reiterated their call for people-centered leadership, justice, and accountability, urging Nigeria’s political class to embrace governance that uplifts rather than marginalizes.
Beyond the liturgical grandeur, the closing Mass symbolized unity. It was a moment where the Church’s hierarchy and its grassroots converged in shared faith and purpose. The incense, hymns, and sacramental rites were not only acts of worship but also a collective plea for divine intervention in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
As the assembly concluded, the bishops departed with renewed commitment to shepherd their flocks and to engage the nation’s leaders with courage and compassion.
The Catholic Secretariat at Durumi, having hosted this pivotal
gathering, now stands as a beacon of hope, a reminder
