2023 presidency: Catholic Bishops advise Nigerians on competence

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), has advised Nigerians to use competence as the yardstick as they go to the polls to choose a new President for the nation in 2023.

The group called on Nigerians to avoid the temptation of falling into a divisive political campaign ahead of next year’s general elections in the country.

Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, the President of CBCN, made the remarks during the opening of the organisation’s first plenary in 2022, held in Abuja.

Akubeze said that Nigerians cannot run away from the fact that very often, people get the kind of government they deserve, lamenting that the number of Nigerians who vote was very few.

Pope Francis has used his new year’s message to call for an end to violence against women, saying it was an insult to God, Guardian reports.

Celebrating mass in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, on the day the Roman Catholic church marks its annual World Day of Peace, Francis wove his new year’s homily around the themes of motherhood and women, saying it was they who kept the threads of life together, the report stated further, adding that he used the message to make one of his strongest pleas yet for an end to violence against them.

“And since mothers bestow life, and women keep the world [together], let us all make greater efforts to promote mothers and to protect women,” he said.

A MESSAGE TO NIGERIAN CHRISTIANS – Femi Emmanuel

-          We have prayed enough and God has answered our prayers.

-          God answered our prayers by giving us large followership.

-          Mega churches in Nigeria are not available anywhere in the world.

-          No church like Redeem … in the world.

-          No church like Winners … in the world.

-          No church like Mountain of Fire … in the world.

-          No church like Chosen … in the world.

-          No church like Christ Embassy … in the world.

-          No church like Deeper Life … in the world.

-          Redeem alone has over 40,000 parishes.

-          Winners alone has over 30,000 parishes.

We have prayed enough and God has answered! The church should wake up, rise up and start playing their part in building a better Nigeria. We have the number, we have the resources, we have everything we need to repair Nigeria from the grassroots. The time to start is now!

This message was delivered by Pastor Femi Emmanuel, Presiding Pastor of Livingspring Chapel International while addressing his congregation as Nigeria marks her 61st Independence Anniversary.

Calling on Nigerian Christians to partake in politics from the grassroots, Pastor Femi has equally asked them to change their prayer modes.

“So, it’s not just ‘deliver Nigeria, Deliver Nigeria’, he said. “It should be called ‘Wake up your church’.

“Talk to your General Overseers. The church community is an imprisoned community. Our General Overseers have imprisoned us. They must release us, mobilize us, encourage us to go to the grass root. Politics is in the grassroots”, he added.

UK Methodist Church to allow same-sex-marriage after historic vote

After debates on the topic at the Methodist Conference, the proposals to allow same-sex marriages were passed with 254 votes in favor and 46 against

As such, the Methodist church has become the largest religious denomination in the UK to allow same-sex marriages, putting it at odds with the Church of England.

The Church announced on Wednesday that same-sex couples will be allowed to get married on its premises, although, the freedom of conscience clause will allow ministers to opt out of conducting such weddings.

According to a report by the Guardian, the Rev Sonia Hicks, elected as the Methodists’ first black female president at the weekend, said it was a “historic day for our church”. She urged people “to support each other respecting our differences”. Dignity & Worth, a campaign group in the Methodist Church, said the vote was a “momentous step on the road to justice and inclusion” after many years of sometimes painful conversations. Rev. Sam McBratney, who chairs the group, praised the “courageous step” taken by the church.

The report states that the conference also voted to recognise, accept, and celebrate the love and commitment of unmarried cohabiting couples. Same-sex marriage is forbidden in the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church but permitted by Quakers in Britain, the Scottish Episcopal Church, and United Reformed Church. Jayne Ozanne, a campaigner for LGBT+ equality and a member of the C of E’s ruling body, the General Synod, said the vote reflected “the significant shift that there has been among Christian attitudes in England, and shows how so many people would echo the recent call of Bishop Paul Bayes to allow same-sex marriage in the C of E”.

Kidnappers disguised as a Bishop, Military man, stormed Dunamis to trick me — Pastor Enenche

Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of the Dunamis International Church

The Senior Pastor of the Dunamis International Church, Abuja, Dr Paul Enenche, has narrated that two kidnappers, who disguised as a bishop from The Gambia and a naval officer stormed the church’s headquarters, Glory Dome, at the Airport Road Abuja to defraud him.

According to Sahara Reporters, Enenche stated this during a sermon last Wednesday that they were, however, exposed by the Spirit of God. He stated that the suspected criminals were exposed during a chat with a little girl who they had kidnapped from Anambra State. He revealed that the assailants were handed over to law enforcement agents after which they confessed to be criminals.

“On Monday I received a text message from a bishop who claimed he came from the country of Gambia and that he wanted to see me because he had an encounter where he was directed to meet with me so that I can pray and impact him so he can return to Gambia”, Enenche said. ”He said he got someone’s number who would give him my contact, so after contacting the person, he (man in Nigeria) urged him to come to him so they would both meet me.

“The bishop told me that the man who promised to bring him to me demanded N1 million which according to him, he gave but said the person was no longer answering his calls.

“We called our pastor in the local government (area) where the man said he was, and when our pastor met the man, he told us that the story sounded real.

U.S. Catholic leaders say they aren't moving to deny Biden communion

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops quietly clarified this week that there will be "no national policy on withholding Communion from politicians" after some bishops had raised the issue.

Why it matters: A wave of controversy and debate occurred after the conference overwhelmingly voted to draft a "teaching document," which many hoped would rebuke Biden and other Catholic politicians for receiving Communion despite their support for abortion rights, per AP.

·         Four days after the vote, the USCCB released a Q&A without its previous references to Biden, a national policy or abortion.

If you hear that Catholics want to deny Biden Communion, check the details

Conservative media was recently buzzing with headlines proclaiming that huge majorities of American Catholics think President Joe Biden, a Catholic, should be denied Communion because of his pro-choice policy position.

The Federalist proclaimed "Majority Of Church-Going Catholics Believe Biden Should Not Receive Communion"; National Review asserted "Majority of Church-Going Catholics Say Pro-Abortion Politicians Shouldn't Receive Communion"; and The Washington Examiner warned "Bishops beware: 74% say no Communion for Biden."

But there are big problems with these headlines and the poll that produced them. For one, CatholicVote.org, the right-wing Catholic group that conducted the poll, did not actually ask respondents what the bishops should do about Biden given his stance on abortion, but rather what decision "public officials" should make for themselves when they publicly disagree with church teaching.

Had the words "Biden" and "abortion" been in the question, the results may have looked quite different (as they do in other polling).

LUX TERRA MARKS WORLD DIALOGUE DAY WITH A TOWN HALL MEETING

The Network and Advocacy Group of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation organised a Town Hall Meeting to celebrate the 2021 World Dialogue Day, known more fully as "World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development," with the theme: NATIONAL INTEGRATION AND THE IMPERATIVE OF DIALOGUE, on Friday May 21, 2021.

The Executive Director, Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, Fr George Ehusani, who was one of the panellists, said the importance of this for Nigerians cannot be overemphasized, as it provides an opportunity for citizens to deepen their understanding of the importance of dialogue as an ongoing engagement in a culturally, religiously and politically diverse society such as our own, and at such a crisis moment as we are presently going through.

He said there is the need to listen to each other, and to genuinely seek to understand each other’s feelings and perspectives; and where there are serious differences of opinion, to respect the right of the other person or group to express such opinions.

INFORMATION AS A PUBLIC GOOD AND THE QUEST FOR PRESS FREEDOM - Ehusani

INFORMATION AS A PUBLIC GOOD AND THE QUEST FOR PRESS FREEDOM

Lead Paper presented at the World Press Freedom Day Media Stakeholders’ Roundtable

Abuja, May 5, 2021.

By

Rev. Fr. George EHUSANI, Executive Director, Lux Terra Leadership Foundation

___________________________________________________________________________

 A: INTRODUCTION

1.   The theme for the World Press Freedom Day, May 3, 2021 is “Information as a public good” per UNESCO, and the day was observed in Nigeria as elsewhere according to tradition. It is a day to Promote the Freedom of the Press, to Fight Against Oppressive or Tyrannical Governments that seek to curtail this fundamental right, and also a day to honour our fallen heroes – innocent journalists like Dele Giwa, Bagauda Kaltho and Chinedu Offoaro who lost their lives at the hands of brutal dictators or “disappeared” on account of simply discharging their duties! We pay tribute to the likes of Tunde Thompson and others who spent years in jail, for simply doing their work as journalists during the dark days of military dictatorship in Nigeria. We pay tribute to functionaries of the Newswatch Magazine, Tell Magazine, the Guardian, Tribune, Punch, Champion, Vanguard, and Daily Trust Newspaper among other print media outfits that risked everything in the course of providing space for champions and advocates of democracy and free speech, through those years often describes as “years eaten by the locust.”

Yes, I agree with Lanre Arogundade that “there cannot be information for public good where journalists are in chains!” Yes, there cannot be information for public good when governments or agencies of government routinely weaponize the law, to punish individuals and group that express dissenting views. We cannot have information for public good when journalists and media houses are targeted mainly for uncovering uncomfortable truths, reporting failures of government or exposing high level corruption.

What is a public good? “Public Good,” also known as “the Common Good” is one of the nine cardinal principles in the Catholic Social lexicon, along with: the principle of Human Dignity and Inviolability, Participation, Distributive Justice, Peace & Non-Violence, Subsidiarity, Preferential Option for the Poor and the Vulnerable, Solidarity, and Human Stewardship over Natural Creation. In this lexicon the common good is defined as “the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as individuals or as groups, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily.”

In ordinary political discourse Common or Public Good refers to those provisions and facilities – whether material cultural or institutional – that a community provides to all members in order to fulfil a relational obligation. They all have to care for certain interests that they all have in common. Typical examples of the common good in a modern liberal democracy include: the road system; public parks; police protection and public safety; courts and the judicial system; public schools; museums and cultural institutions; public transportation; civil liberties, such as the freedom of speech (which includes the press freedom) and the freedom of association; the system of property; clean air and clean water; and national defense. The term itself may refer either to the interests that members have in common or to the facilities that serve common interests. For example, people may say, “the new public library will serve the common good” or “the public library is part of the common good”.
