TRCN Raises Alarm Over Unqualified Teachers in Nigeria
In a sobering revelation timed with the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has sounded the alarm over the widespread presence of unqualified teachers across the country’s educational landscape.
Dr. Ronke
Soyombo, Chief Executive Officer of TRCN, made the disclosure during an
interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief,” emphasizing that the
issue is particularly rampant in private schools and is a major contributor to
the declining standards of education nationwide.
Dr.
Soyombo explained that many individuals currently occupying teaching positions
lack the professional training and pedagogical skills required to effectively
educate students. She stressed that attending a teacher’s college alone does
not equate to being a qualified teacher. True competence, she argued, lies in
the ability to translate knowledge into meaningful learning experiences
tailored to the needs of diverse learners. The TRCN head lamented that while
some individuals have a genuine passion for teaching, their lack of formal
qualifications prevents them from entering the profession through official
channels.
To
address this crisis, TRCN has initiated several reforms aimed at expanding the
pool of qualified educators. One of the key strategies is the acceleration of
the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), which has been shortened from one
year to six months for experienced but uncertified teachers.
This
initiative is designed to fast-track the certification process for individuals
who already possess degrees in other fields but wish to transition into
teaching.
The
council has also digitized its registration systems to make enrollment more
accessible, with a goal of increasing the number of registered.
