Special Report: The First 2026 CBCN Plenary

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) convened its first plenary assembly of 2026 in Abuja, marking a significant moment of reflection and pastoral direction for the Church and the nation.

The gathering opened with a solemn Mass at St. Gabriel’s Chaplaincy, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Durumi, on the First Sunday of Lent. Archbishop Ignatius A. Kaigama of the Abuja Archdiocese delivered the homily, urging Christians and national leaders alike to resist the allure of worldly pleasures and instead embrace integrity, service, and spiritual renewal.

His message emphasized the importance of moral leadership and the pursuit of the common good in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.

The theme of the plenary, “The Common Good and Leadership in Nigeria,” framed the bishops’ deliberations. It underscored the Church’s commitment to fostering responsible governance, social justice, and unity in a nation facing economic and political challenges.

The bishops used the occasion to call for renewed dedication to values that strengthen both faith and civic responsibility.

The plenary also drew participation from government officials. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, delivered a goodwill message reaffirming the Federal Government’s partnership with the Catholic Church. He pledged collaboration on peacebuilding, social protection, and reforms aimed at advancing national development and cohesion.

His remarks highlighted the importance of synergy between religious institutions and the state in addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues.

The First 2026 CBCN Plenary was not only a spiritual convocation but also a national dialogue. It brought together bishops, clergy, and government representatives to reflect on leadership, morality, and the pursuit of the common good.

The assembly reinforced the Church’s role as a moral compass, urging both leaders and citizens to prioritize integrity, service, and unity in the face of contemporary challenges.
