FCTA PRESS RELEASE
PRESIDENT TINUBU HAILS FCT MINISTER'S APPROACH
TO INFRASTRUCTURE DELIVERY
… AS HE COMMISSIONS GADUWA
DISTRICT ROAD NETWORK
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, for ending the
era of abandoned inner roads and transforming infrastructure delivery across
the nation’s capital.
President Tinubu gave the commendation in Abuja on
Wednesday, July 1, 2026 while officially commissioning the
full-scope development of Akinwumi Ajibola Street covering Important Local
Streets (ILS) 16, 18, and 19 in Abuja's Gaduwa District.
Represented at the event by the Senate President,
Senator Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu, added that the FCT Minister has completely eliminated the excuse of
financial delays in project
delivery by paying contractors on time and ensuring that projects are completed within schedule.
He said, “Let me put it on record. You have changed
the culture of delivery in the FCT. You ended the era of mobilization without
movement. You ended the era of abandoned inner roads while major highways took
all the attention”.
Speaking further, the President said, “You are taking
development from the city centre into the districts and the satellite towns,
street by street, so that no resident is left behind. That is leadership. You
inspect, you correct, you finish. Minister Wike, you have my confidence, you have my commendation, and the FCT has your
results. Well done to you and to your team”, President Tinubu stated.
Speaking on the Gaduwa District road, the President
observed that prior to government’s intervention, residents in the area faced severe challenges in
accessing their homes due to the lack of motorable roads. He said the
completion of the project will enhance the living conditions of residents
within the Gaduwa District and also improve connectivity around the area.
According to him, "This project
returns dignity to residents who should never have been forced to choose
between owning a home and reaching it. That is governance: small projects, big
impact."
While also pointing out that the completion of the
project has led to appreciation in property values and reduced damage to
vehicles and travel time, President Tinubu charged Gaduwa residents to protect the
new infrastructure by keeping drainages free of refuse and reporting any
vandalism early.
Earlier in his remarks, the FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike credited the ongoing transformation of the nation’s capital to the unwavering backing of President Tinubu. He also recognized the National Assembly's critical role, noting that their prompt approval and passage of the FCT's statutory budgets unlocked the essential funding required for these projects.
Recalling the explicit mandate given to him by
President Tinubu upon his
appointment to extend development to every part of the FCT, from the city center to the satellite
towns, the FCT Minister noted that residents
across all districts are now experiencing real progress.
He pointed out that following the commissioning of a 13km road in Kwali
the previous day, the administration was now launching a new project in Gaduwa
District, proving that the Renewed Hope Agenda is delivering widespread
infrastructure unlike past administrations.
“Mr. President, yesterday you were in Kwali to
commission the 13km road project. Today you are in Gaduwa District. We have
been to virtually all the districts and no district will say they are not
feeling the impact of this administration, unlike what used to be. The citizens
can now feel the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda. With your continuous
support, FCT will see more developments in your tenure”, Barr. Wike stated.
The Minister also commended the Acting Executive Secretary of the
Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and his engineering team for
ensuring high-quality standards.
Confirming that newly constructed roads in the FCT would soon be systematically named to
avoid confusion, Barr. Wike issued a firm warning
to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher
Maikalangu, against unilaterally naming streets constructed by the FCT
Administration.
While acknowledging the power of local authorities
to name roads, the Minister insisted that they must seek clearance from the
FCTA before doing such. “If the street is within the city, and it is the
government of the State and the Federal Government that constructed that road,
permission must be taken from either the State or the FG before you name those
roads or streets”, the Minister stated.
The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, who also spoke at the event, extended her appreciation
to both President Tinubu and the National Assembly leadership for their
continuous partnership and
commended Barr. Wike's relentless determination to rewrite Abuja's infrastructural
landscape.
Delivering the technical overview, Executive Secretary, FCDA, Engr
Richard Yunana Dauda, stated that the full scope development of Akinwumi
Ajibola Street within Gaduwa District was in line with the Administration's
mandate of developing district infrastructure in the Federal Capital City. He
said the contract was awarded to Messrs CGC, Nigeria Limited in January 2026
and completed within 6 months.
He explained that the road is also technically called ILS 18, with connecting spurs through ILS 16 and 19, and a link to Collector C05 while providing interconnectivity within and outside Gaduwa, a critical feature, since the district was bound by major areas in the City such as Durumi, Lokogoma and Gudu. He said the scope of work involved the provision of crucial engineering infrastructure which included the provision of 2 lanes with parking lanes on each side, telecommunication ducts as well as street lighting. Engr Dauda pointed out that the project had opened up the neighbourhood for rapid development of the area, enhanced security and improved the socioeconomic life of the residents.
