The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)

‘All are alarmed that weak governance accentuates the problems and casts doubt on the leadership’s ability to weather the storm.

‘Among the daunting headwinds is, ironically, the spike in crude oil and gas prices that ordinarily should have been a boost for a major exporter. But as the country irrationally relies wholly on imports for refined petroleum products, higher prices mean higher costs of imports, and higher subsidy costs, which planned stoppage the government shifted by another 18 months.

‘Corruption, fiscal recklessness by the government and external pressures have, combined with its own incompetence, defeated the monetary authority’s efforts to effectively manage the exchange rate.

2023 presidency: Catholic Bishops advise Nigerians on competence

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), has advised Nigerians to use competence as the yardstick as they go to the polls to choose a new President for the nation in 2023.

The group called on Nigerians to avoid the temptation of falling into a divisive political campaign ahead of next year’s general elections in the country.

Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, the President of CBCN, made the remarks during the opening of the organisation’s first plenary in 2022, held in Abuja.

Akubeze said that Nigerians cannot run away from the fact that very often, people get the kind of government they deserve, lamenting that the number of Nigerians who vote was very few.

CATCH-UP: Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket

On Catch-Up this week we have our spotlight on “Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket” which reportedly began as a simple lunch counter selling sandwiches in a gas station along Route 66, operated by Ervin 'Irv' Kolarik, that was opened some time during the late 1920s. In 1938, two local farm women entered Irv Kolarik's gas station for a cup of coffee; they overheard him complaining about how he hated running a gas station and preferred running the lunch counter instead, and offered to share their secret recipe for fried chicken with him if he agreed to buy his chickens from them. In fact, they even agreed to go to work for him and make the chicken. Kolarik consented, and the chicken was an instant success. The lunch counter was no longer sufficient for serving customers. Kolarik initially converted the station's by then disused automobile repair garage bays into dining rooms, which eventually became known as the National Chicken Basket; but by the mid-1940s, further demand made it clear that a new building was needed to serve patrons. This prompted Kolarik to buy the adjacent property and build a full-service restaurant. Kolarik hired Chicago architect Eugene F. Stoyke to construct the one-story brick restaurant and cocktail lounge.

"People With Disabilities Should Be Treated Differently"

This is definitely one of the most annoying myths about disabled dating out there. A lot of people think that differently-abled individuals require some kind of a special treatment and this is the biggest reason why these folks are not excited about revealing their disabilities. So, Ukrainians are so racist that they gathered and worshiped in large numbers at a church with Nigerian roots? - Omokri

As Black Africans all over the world scream racism and turn the global media increasingly against Ukraine, because their border officials prioritised the evacuation of Ukrainian citizens over foreigners (they did not do it to only Black Africans. I went there to verify. They did it to all non nationals), let us remember that the largest church in Ukraine is the Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations. It was founded by a Black African. Specifically, a Nigerian. Mr. Sunday Adelaja.

Reno Omokri made these submissions via a post on his Instagram page a few minutes ago.

“So, Ukrainians are so racist that they gathered and worshiped in large numbers at a church with Nigerian roots?”, the message stated.  “Where are human beings most open and sincere? Of course, that would be in a house of worship!

XCLUSIVE INTERACTIVE: TikTok Fashion Icon @Tinyjewishgirl on the Art of Low-Balling

XLUSIVE INTERACTIVE this week is a spotlight on @Tinyjewishgirl, as packaged by the Interview Magazine.

Clara Perlmutter—or @tinyjewishgirl, as she’s known to her 772K TikTok followers—found internet fame during the depths of the pandemic. When lockdowns forced her to leave NYU for her parents’ home in Connecticut, Perlmutter, who had spent her college career mastering the art of the perfect on-campus fit, satiated her aesthetic boredom with a series of TikToks staged in the middle of her jam-packed closet. The college student showed viewers how she would dress for occasions that didn’t exist, trotting out obscure ’90s designer pieces and thrifted favorites in the process. Two years later, Perlmutter has remained true to her own formula, drawing on an expansive knowledge of fashion history to source archival pieces while pulling together ever-more outlandish outfits. To find out how she does it, we slid into the @tinyjewishgirl DMs.

Ukrainians do not want to flee. They do not want to pack their lives into a suitcase. They do not want to crowd aboard packed trains that carry them away from their homes, or trudge for days with their children. They do not want to leave behind husbands and sons and parents. They do not want to begin again in a foreign country where they have nothing, far from those they love.
