Kano Assembly Loses Two Lawmakers in One Day
In an unprecedented tragedy, the Kano State House of Assembly was thrown into mourning on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, following the sudden deaths of two serving lawmakers within hours of each other.
The loss of Hon. Aminu Sa’adu
Ungogo and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji has left the state’s political landscape
shaken and its citizens in deep grief.
The first death occurred when Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, representing the Ungogo Constituency and serving as Chairman of the House Appropriation Committee, fell ill shortly after arriving at the Assembly. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors later confirmed his passing.
Barely an hour later, news broke of the death of Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the representative of Kano Municipal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Pilgrims. His demise was officially announced by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The near-simultaneous deaths of these two prominent legislators sent shockwaves across Kano State. Both men were regarded as dedicated public servants who played vital roles in legislative affairs and grassroots representation.
Hon. Ungogo was known for his work in financial oversight and budgetary matters, while Hon. Daneji was respected for his leadership in matters concerning religious pilgrimages.
Their sudden departure has created a vacuum in the
Assembly, raising concerns about continuity in governance and representation
for their constituencies.
Governor
Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed profound sorrow, describing the incident as a dark
and heartbreaking moment for Kano. In his condolence message, he emphasized
that the loss was not only personal to the families of the deceased but also
collective for the government and people of the state. He praised their
commitment to lawmaking and their devotion to the welfare of their
constituents, noting that words could hardly capture the depth of the tragedy.
The deaths have sparked widespread mourning among political stakeholders, colleagues, and residents. Social media platforms were flooded with tributes, prayers, and expressions of shock.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Ibrahim Adam, first announced Ungogo’s death in a Facebook post, while Daneji’s passing was confirmed shortly afterward by the Director of Media at the Government House.
The timing of the announcements underscored the
gravity of the situation, as the Assembly and the state at large grappled with
the reality of losing two lawmakers in one day.
This double tragedy has raised questions about the health and welfare of public officials, as well as the psychological toll on colleagues who witnessed the events unfold. It also highlights the fragility of political institutions when faced with sudden losses of leadership.
For Kano State, the incident marks one
of the most somber days in its legislative history, reminding citizens of the
unpredictability of life and the importance of resilience in governance.
The Kano
Assembly now faces the difficult task of moving forward while honoring the
memories of Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji. Their
legacies as committed lawmakers will remain etched in the annals of Kano’s
political history, even as their absence leaves a void that will not be easily
filled.
