Osun 2026 - Bola Oyebamiji Emerges APC Governorship Candidate
The
political landscape of Osun State has taken a decisive turn as Asiwaju
Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, former Managing Director of the National Inland
Waterways Authority (NIWA), has officially emerged as the governorship
candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming August 8,
2026 election.
His candidacy was confirmed during the party’s primary election held in Osogbo, the state capital, on December 13, 2025.
The
process that produced Oyebamiji was marked by consensus and unity within the
APC. Prior to the primary, eight aspirants met with President Bola Tinubu at
the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where a collective decision was reached to
support a single candidate in order to strengthen party cohesion.
Following
this meeting, aspirants including Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi,
Akin Ogunbiyi, Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke, Babatunde Hareter Oralusi,
Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, and Oyebamiji himself agreed to back a consensus
arrangement.
During
the primary, Kunle Adegoke moved the motion for Oyebamiji’s adoption, which was
seconded by Senator Babajide Omoworare. The chairman of the primary election,
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, subsequently declared Oyebamiji as the
APC candidate.
The
affirmation of Oyebamiji’s candidacy was not only procedural but also symbolic.
A total of 1,660 accredited delegates from across Osun’s 30 local government
areas participated in the exercise, endorsing him through a voice vote that
underscored the party’s collective resolve.
This
overwhelming support reflects the APC’s determination to present a united front
ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial contest.
Oyebamiji’s
emergence carries significant implications for Osun’s political future. In his
acceptance remarks, he emphasized that Osun State is at a crossroads and pledged
to tackle poverty, revive the health sector, and strengthen governance
structures.
His
background as a technocrat and administrator, particularly his tenure at NIWA,
is expected to shape his campaign narrative as one focused on competence,
reform, and development.
The consensus candidacy also highlights the strategic influence of President Tinubu, who played a pivotal role in fostering unity among the aspirants. By ensuring that internal divisions were minimized, the APC has positioned itself to contest the election with a stronger, more cohesive base.
This move is seen
as critical in a state where political competition has historically been
intense and where opposition parties are expected to mount formidable
challenges.
As the
countdown to August 2026 begins, Bola Oyebamiji’s candidacy sets the stage for
a high-stakes election that will determine the trajectory of governance in Osun
State. His ability to translate party unity into electoral victory will depend
on how effectively he connects with the electorate, addresses pressing
socio-economic issues, and navigates the complex dynamics of Osun’s political
environment.
For now,
his emergence as the APC flagbearer marks a significant milestone in the
unfolding story of Osun’s democratic journey.
