Report on the Lagos Auto Crash: Death of an Eight-Month-Old Baby and a Woman
On
Sunday, December 14, 2025, tragedy struck in Lagos State, Nigeria, when an auto
crash claimed the lives of an eight-month-old baby and an adult woman. The
incident occurred along Ikorodu Road, opposite Olabode House before Obanikoro,
and has since plunged the local community into mourning.
Details of the Incident
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), the accident involved a commercial bus that was traveling at what officials described as “an excessive and perilous velocity.” The bus, which was moving from Palmgrove inward Anthony, suddenly lost mechanical and directional control. In the process, it veered off its lane, crossed the median, and entered the opposing carriageway.
The bus
collided with a moving Volkswagen commercial vehicle carrying passengers from
Anthony toward Palmgrove. The impact of the collision was described as sheer
and violent, leading to immediate fatalities. An adult female passenger aboard
the Volkswagen bus died instantly, while an eight-month-old female infant
succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash.
Rescue Efforts
Emergency
response was swift. LASTMA officials, alongside members of the public, worked
to rescue trapped passengers from the wreckage. Six passengers were rescued
from the Volkswagen bus, while four others were evacuated from the red Tata bus
involved in the crash. In total, ten individuals sustained varying degrees of
injuries and were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The
remains of the deceased victims were recovered and evacuated by the State
Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
Official Response
In a
statement, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo
Taofiq, confirmed the details of the rescue operation and the fatalities. The
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the
bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He also
cautioned commercial motorists against overspeeding and emphasized the
importance of routine vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
Community Impact
The
incident has left the Ikorodu Road corridor and the wider Lagos community in
deep sorrow. The loss of such tender and innocent lives, particularly that of
the infant, has been described as heartrending. The crash serves as a stark
reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the urgent need for stricter
enforcement of road safety regulations in Lagos.
Let’s Take A Break
The Lagos
auto crash of December 14, 2025, highlights the devastating consequences of
overspeeding and mechanical failure on Nigerian roads. While emergency
responders managed to save several lives, the deaths of an eight-month-old baby
and a woman underscore the fragility of life and the importance of vigilance in
road safety. Authorities continue to urge motorists to prioritize caution,
discipline, and regular vehicle checks to prevent future tragedies.
