If I were Nigeria's President, at this time this would be be my state of the nation address:
A New Covenant for Nigeria - Address to the Nation
Fellow Nigerians, I speak to you today with humility and resolve. The year that has passed tested our patience, stretched our compassion, and revealed both the strength and the fragility of our national fabric. I acknowledge the grief of those who lost loved ones, the anxiety of families displaced by floods and insecurity, and the quiet courage of citizens who, in small and large ways, kept our communities alive. We owe them our deepest gratitude and our firmest commitment.
Reflection on
the Year
This year
has been defined by a convergence of challenges and opportunities. We faced
severe weather events that reminded us of the urgency of climate adaptation. We
confronted security threats that demanded renewed focus on protection and
justice for every community. At the same time, our entrepreneurs, young
innovators, and creative industries continued to push boundaries, creating jobs
and new possibilities for our people. These realities coexist: hardship and
hope, setback and ingenuity. Recognizing both is the first step toward honest,
effective governance.
Accountability
and Reform
My
administration will not shy away from responsibility. Where public services
failed, we will investigate, learn, and reform. Where institutions were slow or
opaque, we will introduce transparency measures and strengthen oversight. We
will accelerate reforms that make it easier to do business, that protect
workers, and that ensure public funds are used for public good. Justice must be
swift and impartial; corruption must be met with the full force of the law.
These are not slogans but commitments that will guide concrete policy and
measurable benchmarks.
Security and
the Rule of Law
Security
is not merely the absence of violence; it is the presence of opportunity and
dignity. We will pursue a comprehensive approach that combines professional
security operations with community engagement, investment in local economies,
and support for victims. Our security forces will be trained, equipped, and
held to the highest standards of conduct. At the same time, we will expand
programs that address the root causes of violence: poverty, exclusion, and lack
of education. The rule of law will be strengthened so that every Nigerian,
regardless of background, can expect protection and fairness.
Economic
Renewal and Inclusive Growth
Economic
recovery must be broad-based and inclusive. We will prioritize policies that
stabilize the macroeconomy while targeting support to small and medium
enterprises, agriculture, and the digital economy. Investments in infrastructure,
roads, power, and broadband, will be matched with reforms that unlock private
investment and create sustainable jobs. Social safety nets will be expanded to
protect the most vulnerable as we pursue growth. Above all, we will ensure that
the dividends of progress are shared, not concentrated.
Education,
Health, and the Future
Our
children and young people are the guarantors of Nigeria’s future. We will continue
to invest in schools, vocational training, and higher education so that talent
is nurtured across every region. Health systems will be strengthened to deliver
primary care, maternal services, and emergency response where they are needed
most. We will partner with states, local governments, and the private sector to
build resilient systems that serve all Nigerians with dignity.
Unity, Civic
Responsibility, and National Renewal
Nigeria’s
diversity is a source of strength when it is accompanied by mutual respect and
shared purpose. I call on political leaders, traditional and religious
authorities, civil society, and every citizen to place the national interest
above narrow gain. Civic responsibility means participating in our democracy,
respecting the rights of others, and holding leaders accountable through lawful
means. It also means extending compassion to neighbors in distress and
rejecting rhetoric that divides.
Closing
Commitment
Today I
ask for your trust and your work. Leadership is a partnership between those who
govern and those who are governed. I pledge to lead with humility, to listen
with patience, and to act with urgency. We will publish clear timelines for the
reforms I have outlined and report regularly on progress. Let us move forward
together, repairing what is broken, protecting what is precious, and building
what is possible. In the years ahead, let our legacy be a Nigeria where
opportunity is real, justice is certain, and the dignity of every citizen is
upheld.
May our
shared labor renew the promise of this nation. May our children inherit a
country stronger, fairer, and more united than the one we received. God bless
Nigeria.
