HIV Prevention Drug to Arrive Nigeria in March, Says FG

In a landmark announcement, the Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that consignments of Lenacapavir, a revolutionary HIV prevention drug, will arrive in the country by March 2026.

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) disclosed that preparations are well underway for the rollout of this long-acting injectable medication, which represents a major shift in the nation’s fight against HIV/AIDS.

Lenacapavir, often referred to as LEN, is a groundbreaking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option that requires administration only twice a year. Unlike traditional daily oral PrEP regimens, this injectable drug offers a more convenient and effective alternative, particularly for individuals at high risk of HIV infection.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that Lenacapavir provides near-total protection against HIV, with some studies reporting up to 100% effectiveness when used correctly.

NACA emphasized that the introduction of Lenacapavir is part of Nigeria’s broader commitment to achieving epidemic control. The rollout will be phased, beginning with priority states such as Lagos, Kano, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Regulatory approval has already been secured from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and readiness assessments have been completed in several regions.

The government has also invested in training healthcare personnel and engaging communities to ensure smooth adoption of the drug.

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s public health strategy. With HIV remaining a major health challenge in the country, the arrival of Lenacapavir offers renewed hope for reducing transmission rates and protecting vulnerable populations.

The twice-yearly injectable format is expected to improve adherence, reduce stigma associated with daily medication, and ultimately accelerate progress toward ending the HIV epidemic in Nigeria.

The arrival of Lenacapavir is not just a medical breakthrough, it is a symbol of Nigeria’s determination to harness innovation in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

As March remains, anticipation builds for what could be a turning point in the nation’s decades-long battle against the virus.
