Petrol Tanker overturns, catches fire in Lagos

Petrol Tanker Overturns, Catches Fire in Lagos

Incident Overview

Late yesterday, a petrol tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned in the Ikeja Along area of Lagos State. The vehicle lost control, tipped over, and spilled its contents across the road. Within moments, the highly flammable fuel ignited, triggering a fire outbreak that spread rapidly around the tanker. The blaze caused panic among residents and motorists in the vicinity, with fears of a possible escalation into a larger disaster.

Emergency Response

Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene. Their immediate priorities were to contain the fire, divert traffic, and prevent further casualties. Motorists were redirected away from the danger zone, while firefighters battled the flames to stop them from spreading to nearby structures and vehicles.

Public Reaction

The incident sparked widespread panic among commuters and residents in Ikeja, with many abandoning vehicles and fleeing the area. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with thick smoke billowing into the night sky and the fear of explosions looming over the crowd.

Broader Context

This accident comes just days after another tanker mishap on the Lekki–Epe Expressway, where a midnight disaster was narrowly averted thanks to quick intervention by LASTMA officials. That earlier incident highlighted the recurring dangers posed by petrol-laden tankers navigating Lagos roads, especially during late hours when visibility and control are compromised.

Conclusion

The tanker fire underscores the persistent risks associated with fuel transportation in Lagos. While emergency responders acted promptly to contain the situation, the frequency of such accidents raises urgent questions about road safety, tanker maintenance, and stricter enforcement of transport regulations. The incident serves as yet another reminder of the fragile balance between urban mobility and public safety in Nigeria’s busiest city.
