Transport Ministry partners JOMSAN to end extortion on highways

Disturbed over series of complaints received due to extortion and multiple vehicular taxes imposed by agents alleged to be working with Local Governments Areas on Federal Highways, the Ministry of Transportation, has announced readiness to partner Joint Mobile Sanitation Agency of Nigeria (JOMSAN), in a bid to sanitise the system.

The Minister of State for Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, gave the assurance when the leadership of JOMSAN paid a courtesy visit to the ministry.

Saraki who was represented by the Director, Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, Mrs Esther Ehigie, said the issue of extortion and double taxation on vehicles has raised serious concerns for the ministry.

While noting that there’s need for regulations, she disclosed that the ministry is currently working on a transformation program that will help address issues of multiple taxation especially on vehicles transporting food products on federal highways.

POPE FRANCIS APPOINTS BISHOP KUKAH MEMBER OF THE DICASTERY ON INTEGRAL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, VATICAN CITY

 

The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed His Lordship, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto as a Member of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Human Integral Development. The appointment was contained in a letter to Bishop Kukah dated 11th December, 2020, and signed by His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Turkson, the Prefect of the Dicastery. 

By this appointment, Bishop Kukah will join other members of the Dicastery drawn from different regions of the world to advise and promote the holy Father’s concerns on issues of justice and peace, human rights, torture, human trafficking, care of creation and other issues related to the promotion of human dignity and development. The appointment, which is renewable is for an initial period of five years. The Council will be formally inaugurated on a later date.

Biden Introduces $1.9 Trillion Covid-19 Relief Package

 

President-elect Joe Biden introduced a $1.9 trillion spending package Thursday that aims to speed distribution of the coronavirus vaccines and provide economic relief caused by the pandemic, USA Today reports.

The package proposal includes investing $20 billion in a national vaccination program, $1,400 stimulus checks and expanding unemployment insurance supplements to $400 per week.

"During this pandemic, millions of Americans through no fault of their own, have lost the dignity and respect that comes with a job and a paycheck, "Biden said during a nearly 25-minute speech Thursday. "There is real pain, overwhelming the real economy."

"There's no time to waste. We have to act now,", he said.

140 Years For Gichira

 

A man who sexually abused and impregnated his two underage daughters was Thursday jailed 140 years by a Baricho Court in Kirinyaga, according to online reports.

The prosecutor, Patricia Gikunju, told the court that the girls were abused and one of them gave birth to a baby girl who is now seven months old.

Akorino 'pastor' John Gichira Gichini, age 51 was sentenced after being convicted of the charges against him.

The accused told the court that between June 2019 and August 2020 he sexually abused his daughters aged 14 and 16 years.

 During the sentencing, Senior Principal Magistrate Anthony Mwicigi said the pastor destroyed the lives of his daughters and that he deserves heavy punishment to serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.

The magistrate described the convict as a very bad person whose name should be entered into the register of convicted and most dangerous sex offenders.

However, Gichini in his defense, told the court that he was misled by the devil and sought for forgiveness by his daughters and the court. "The devil reigning on earth and making people to sin.", he said. "I sinned, but I'm remorseful and I will be very happy if pardoned. It was my first time to commit such a crime in my life"

Quoting the Bible, Mr. Mwicigi said the convict is a wicked man whose days are numbered.

Reports have it that relatives said the Gichini had warned his daughters of dire consequences if they reported him.

The convict had been on the run since last December but was flushed out of his hideout in Mbeere South on Sunday and taken to Sagana police station.

As always, bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has analyzed Nigeria's current situation prophetically, intellectually and socially, and has presented the facts as they are based on the evidence before us. He has continually addressed those who wield the reins of power to rule with a bit of humanity and work for the collective good of Nigeria. His record of positive criticisms and suggesting ways to overcome Nigeria's problems spans from the time of the military until now. History will vindicate him for confronting the evil of injustice in Nigeria even at the expense of his own safety. Speaking truth to power in Nigeria, no doubt, demands an uncommon courage, because it is dangerous to do so, and those in power often consider themselves to be beyond the arms of the law.

Bishop Kukah's Christmas message titled, "A Nation in Search of Vindication," accurately and without bias describes the current state of Nigeria: A journey without a feasible destination in sight. In the words of the bishop: "This government owes the nation an explanation as to where it is headed as we seem to journey into darkness." The evidence before us suggests this same conclusion, for beside hunger and poverty, we live in one of the most unsecured countries in the world, as notable northern leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, have attested. When will all these end, given the fact that this government placed eradicating corruption and insecurity on the front burner of its campaign promises? When asked government's timeframe for ending Nigeria's security challenges about a week ago, the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, seems to have no clue. Against logic and international best practices, he simply told Nigerians to be patient with government until whenever that happens. His view that Nigerians, who die daily in the hands of armed herdsmen and terrorists, do the government no favour by being patient is perhaps the most uncritical and insensitive statement to ever come from a government spokesperson. Again, no explanation is offered, no realistic hope is given; patient must the people be. Mr. Adesina's statement seems to reinforce the suspicion that this government is aloft from the challenges of Nigerians.
