Karla Cornejo Villavicencio's book "The Undocumented Americans" is a finalist for nonfiction for the National Book Award - the first time an undocumented immigrant has been named.
According to the CNN report, Cornejo Villavicencio says "This book is for everybody who wants to step away from the buzzwords in immigration, the talking heads, the kids in graduation caps and gowns, and read about the people underground. Not heroes. Randoms. People. Characters".

Cornejo Villavicencio, according to the report is no longer undocumented. She recently received her green card and became a legal permanent resident.

In "The Undocumented Americans", the writer aims to rveal the complex lives of people who are often oversimplified or overlooked.
