"The World Malaria Report 2021 reaffirmed the sorry reality of Nigeria and other SSA states: 80 per cent of all malaria deaths in the region were of children under age five. This is an unacceptably high toll that should be reversed at all costs. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the 36 state governors should take note of these figures: Nigeria, with 31.9 per cent of the total, led three other African countries to account for over half of the total global deaths. It was followed by Congo DR’s 13.2 per cent; Tanzania’s 4.1 per cent, and Mozambique’s 3.8 per cent. One study described malaria as Nigeria’s No.1 public health problem, accounting for 30 per cent of all under-five deaths, 25 per cent of deaths in infants and 11 per cent of maternal mortality.

The country has failed to utilise or maximise global interventions to reduce the disease burden. Both the 1998 Roll Back Malaria project aimed at malaria burden reduction by at least 50 per cent through precise interventions, and the 2005 Abuja Declaration to overturn malaria burden, were poorly executed. Till date, Nigeria falters and wobbles on lofty malaria eradication initiatives designed to reverse the trend. Like many other national programmes, there is no consistency in implementation as succeeding administrations and ministers often abandon ongoing activities halfway to promote empty new slogans.

WAO! EFCC, ICPC officials accuse Buhari of sabotaging fight against corruption

Officials of Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies, EFCC and ICPC, say their morale and commitment to work have been affected by the controversial presidential pardon of Jolly Nyame, former governor of Taraba State, and Joshua Dariye, former governor of Plateau State. Both men had been convicted and jailed for stealing state funds, Premium Times report.

Asked not to be named for fear of victimization, according to the report, officials of the two institutions, in separate interviews with PREMIUM TIMES, lamented the pardon and accused President Muhammadu Buhari of sabotaging the anti-corruption fight.

“We used to say our problem in our work against corruption is the judiciary but we see a lack of political will by the president,” one EFCC official said.

TO MEND A BROKEN NATION: THE EASTER METAPHOR:

(Easter Message by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Diocese of Sokoto, April 17th, 2022)

1: Hello brothers and sisters in Christ, men and women of goodwill everywhere, I send you hearty greetings and felicitations as we celebrate the risen Christ. Easter is here again. For all Christians, Easter is a metaphor for our lives as individuals, families, communities or nations. Easter is a metaphor for how shame, scandal, powerlessness, weakness, and opprobrium suddenly transform into glory, honour, pre-eminence, laudation and applause. It is a fulfilment of what the Master himself had foretold when He said, ‘Unless a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain, but if it dies, it bears much fruit’ (Jn. 12: 24). And the Psalmist had said, ‘Those who sow in tears will sing when they reap.’ (Ps. 126:5).

… every session of the National Assembly has always taken it upon itself to tinker with the Constitution, yet the major pillars of the nation’s grundnorm – centralised federalism – remain unchanged. At the federal level, the Legislature and Judiciary enjoy relative independence, except in instances where their leaderships voluntarily surrender their independence to the Executive for whatever gain. But at the state level, their independence is hampered by the fact that they depend on the state purse, which is controlled by the Executive, to operate.

Governors have also deprived the grassroots electorate of their right to elect their own local government leadership by ensuring that their parties always win. Local government elections have become the means by which governors plant their surrogates to enable them control local government funds. One of the problems this spawns is the prevalence of the “ungoverned spaces” syndrome and attendant security breaches all over the country.

What Every Parent Needs to Know about the Prodigal Child

Some kids are born to push the boundaries. They are hardwired to do things the hard way. In a recent parenting Bible Study that addresses complex cultural issues, pastor and theologian Ray Ortlund says, “Some children will find Jesus the hard way. But it is better to find Jesus.”

Yes, it is better to find Jesus the hard way if a child insists, but what can a parent do when their child is wandering?

That is a topic I addressed in a recent article as well as a recent episode of CHRISTIAN PARENT/CRAZY WORLD, which just turned one year old and earned the 2022 award for Best Kids and Family Podcast by Spark Media. Having a battle plan and prayer guide at your side is imperative if you have a child who is not walking with the Lord.

Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja

Chrism Mass at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Abuja, 12th April, 2022. Homily by Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja

READINGS: Is. 61: 1-3, 6, 8-9; Ps. 88(89): 21-22, 25, 27; Rev. 1: 5-8; Lk. 4: 16-21

This week marks the peak of our Lenten observance, a period during which the Church calls us to more intense prayers, sacrificial giving and personal discipline, and invites us to make more deliberate efforts to be nearer to our God in purity of mind and heart. This last week of Lent can be compared to what is for the mechanic, a time for overhauling the engine of a car for a pending journey, for the student, a time of intense revision for exams, for the trader, a time of reconciling accounts before the next purchases, for the footballer, an extra time during a match, for the priest/religious, the fervent preparations for ordination or profession, and for every Christian, a time to urgently call on Jesus as Bartimaeus the blind beggar (cf. Mk. 10:46-52) frantically did when Jesus was passing by. I urge us to use this golden opportunity of the Holy Week to renew our respective commitments to Jesus and to listen to what the Holy Spirit says to us as a family.
