Tragedy in Kano - Father, Son, and Others Lost in Well Collapse and Fire Incident

The city of Kano was struck by a series of heartbreaking tragedies that claimed multiple lives in early December 2025.

According to the Kano State Fire Service, the incidents occurred across different communities in the state, underscoring both the fragility of everyday life and the dangers of unsafe rescue attempts.

The first disaster unfolded at Badawa Layin Day by Day in Nassarawa Local Government Area. Around 11:57 a.m., a fire engulfed a residential building measuring approximately 25 by 20 feet. Two bedrooms were severely damaged, and a 10-year-old girl was trapped inside.

Firefighters managed to pull her out unconscious, but she was later confirmed dead. The child’s death highlighted the devastating impact of domestic fires and the urgent need for preventive measures in residential areas.

The second and more harrowing tragedy occurred in Badume Kanawa Village, Bichi Local Government Area. A 65-year-old man, identified as Sa’idu Gada, was working inside a well when disaster struck. His son attempted to rescue him after he encountered difficulty, but both were overwhelmed.

A third man, another rescuer, also entered the well in a desperate bid to save them. Tragically, all three lost their lives. This incident illustrated the peril of untrained rescue efforts in hazardous environments, where toxic gases or structural collapse can quickly overwhelm even the strongest individuals.

A third incident compounded the sorrow. In another part of Kano, additional fatalities were recorded in separate emergencies, bringing the total number of deaths across these tragedies to five. The Fire Service described the occurrences as “deeply saddening and preventable,” issuing a stern warning to residents against entering wells or attempting dangerous rescues without professional assistance.

The Kano State Fire Service emphasized that these deaths were avoidable and urged the public to prioritize safety. Wells, often essential for water supply in rural communities, can become death traps when poorly maintained or when rescue attempts are made without proper equipment.

Similarly, domestic fires remain a persistent threat, particularly in densely populated areas where electrical faults, cooking accidents, or flammable materials can quickly escalate into deadly blazes.

These tragedies serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of community awareness, safety education, and reliance on trained emergency responders.

The loss of a father, his son, and others in such circumstances has left families devastated and communities shaken.

Authorities continue to stress that prevention, vigilance, and caution are the most effective tools to avert similar disasters in the future.
