The Seven-Point Action Plan of the Northern Elders
The
Northern Elders Political Development Group’s communiqué did not stop at
condemning Senator Kabiru Marafa’s call for U.S. invasion; it also laid out a
structured seven-point action plan aimed at tackling insecurity and
strengthening unity in Nigeria.
Each point reflects a deliberate attempt to balance immediate security concerns with long-term social cohesion.
1.
Investigation of Politicians Sponsoring Fake News The elders urged security
agencies to probe politicians in Zamfara, Katsina, and other northern states
accused of spreading false information designed to heighten tension. This
measure seeks to curb the weaponization of misinformation, which often fuels
instability and erodes public trust.
2.
Endorsement of Federal Government Security Efforts They expressed support for
ongoing federal initiatives, particularly Operation Fansan Yamma, which has
been deployed to confront banditry and insurgency. By endorsing these efforts,
the elders signaled their alignment with national strategies rather than
advocating parallel or divisive approaches.
3.
Commendation of Key Security Leaders The communiqué praised the contributions of
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of State for Defence Bello
Matawalle. Recognizing leadership is not merely symbolic; it reinforces
accountability and encourages continuity in effective security operations.
4.
Appeal to Traditional and Religious Leaders The elders called on traditional rulers and
religious figures to intensify efforts to unite communities. Their influence is
seen as vital in bridging divides, fostering reconciliation, and countering
extremist narratives that often exploit social fractures.
5.
Promotion of Community Unity Beyond leadership, the plan emphasizes grassroots
unity. The elders believe that communities must be mobilized to resist division
and strengthen resilience against insecurity. This reflects a bottom-up
approach to peacebuilding.
6.
Addressing Youth Indiscipline and Social Media Misuse They highlighted the need to curb
youth indiscipline, particularly the reckless use of social media. This point
acknowledges the role of digital platforms in amplifying misinformation and
radicalization, while also pointing to the importance of guiding young people
toward constructive civic engagement.
7.
Consolidation of Security Achievements Finally, the elders stressed the importance of
consolidating recent successes, such as the safe rescue of GGCS Maga
schoolgirls. By contrasting this outcome with past tragedies like Chibok and
Dapchi, they underscored the need to build on positive momentum rather than
allow complacency to set in.
Taken
together, the seven points form a holistic framework: tackling misinformation,
supporting government operations, recognizing leadership, mobilizing
traditional and religious institutions, fostering unity, guiding youth, and
consolidating gains. It is a plan that insists Nigeria’s security challenges
must be solved internally, through collaboration and accountability, rather
than through external intervention.
