Tragedy at Chester Car Dealership
In a
harrowing incident at Lookers Nissan in Chester, a routine car test turned
catastrophic, leaving a woman permanently confined to a wheelchair.
The accident unfolded when 36-year-old mature student and mother-of-seven, Hayat Ibrhim, sought assistance from a salesman to better understand the controls of her newly purchased £40,000 Nissan X-Trail.
Struggling
with the vehicle’s pedals, Ibrhim mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of
the brake. The SUV, weighing nearly two tons, surged forward uncontrollably.
The
vehicle struck 55-year-old Karen Smaali, who was at the dealership to purchase
her own car. Smaali, already facing mobility challenges and preparing for a hip
operation, had hoped her new car would grant her greater independence. Instead,
she was hit with devastating force at approximately 30mph. The collision left
her with severe head and leg injuries, plunging her into a ten-day coma.
Her
ordeal worsened during hospitalization. Smaali developed sepsis in her left
leg, necessitating amputation, and suffered a stroke. These complications
sealed her fate: she will never walk again and is now permanently reliant on a
wheelchair.
The
accident not only robbed her of physical mobility but also altered the
trajectory of her life, transforming what should have been a hopeful moment
into a tragedy.
This case
underscores the grave risks that can arise from even minor lapses in vehicle
control, particularly in high-powered modern SUVs. It also highlights the
vulnerability of individuals with pre-existing health conditions when faced
with sudden trauma.
The
courtroom revelations paint a sobering picture of how a single misstep behind
the wheel can irreversibly change lives.
