FG unveils AI model for local languages

FG Unveils AI Model to Preserve and Promote Nigerian Local Languages

In a landmark move aimed at harnessing technology to preserve Nigeria’s rich linguistic heritage, the Federal Government has officially launched an artificial intelligence model tailored to support local languages.

This initiative marks a significant stride in the country’s digital transformation agenda, particularly in the realm of cultural preservation and inclusive technological development.

The AI model, developed in collaboration with local and international tech experts, is designed to understand, translate, and generate content in several indigenous Nigerian languages, including Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and over 500 other dialects spoken across the country.

By integrating these languages into digital platforms, the government aims to bridge the communication gap in education, governance, and public services, especially for communities that have historically been marginalized due to language barriers.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that the project is not merely a technological feat but a cultural renaissance. He noted that the AI model will be instrumental in promoting literacy, enabling access to government services, and fostering national unity through linguistic inclusivity. The model is also expected to support developers and researchers in building applications that cater to local needs, thereby stimulating innovation within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

The unveiling ceremony, held in Abuja, brought together stakeholders from academia, the tech industry, and traditional institutions. Demonstrations showcased the model’s capabilities in real-time translation, voice recognition, and conversational AI, all tailored to local linguistic nuances. Experts hailed the initiative as a potential game-changer for digital education, e-governance, and content creation in Nigeria.

This development aligns with the broader goals of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which seeks to position Nigeria as a leader in ethical and inclusive AI deployment across Africa. By embedding indigenous languages into the digital fabric of society, the government hopes to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind in the ongoing technological revolution.
