A Crown of Legacy: Rashidi Ladoja Ascends as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

In a moment steeped in tradition and history, the ancient city of Ibadan witnessed the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The ceremony, held on Friday, September 26, 2025, marked the culmination of a long and distinguished journey through the intricate chieftaincy hierarchy unique to Ibadan, a system that has long been admired for its orderly and inclusive succession process.

Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and a seasoned statesman, began the day’s rites at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba, where he received the symbolic Akoko leaf, a sacred emblem signifying his readiness to ascend the throne. From there, the procession moved to the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, where the formal crowning took place amid chants, drumming, and traditional prayers. The atmosphere was electric, as cultural troupes, traders, and well-wishers flooded the streets in celebration of a new chapter in Ibadan’s storied monarchy.

The coronation was not merely ceremonial, it was a powerful affirmation of Ibadan’s enduring cultural identity. The city’s succession model, which allows high-ranking chiefs to ascend based on seniority and service rather than lineage alone, once again proved its resilience and relevance. Ladoja’s rise followed the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025.

Governor Seyi Makinde, cutting short his annual leave to attend the event, is expected to formally present the staff and instrument of office to the new monarch at the historic Mapo Hall, a venue that has long served as the symbolic heart of Ibadan’s political and cultural life.

The coronation drew a constellation of dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, traditional rulers like the Soun of Ogbomoso and the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, and prominent figures from the political, religious, and business spheres. Security was tight, with operatives from multiple agencies ensuring a smooth and dignified occasion.

For the people of Ibadan, Ladoja’s coronation is more than a change of leadership, it is a renewal of unity, pride, and cultural continuity. His background as a politician and administrator brings a modern dimension to the throne, and many anticipate that his reign will blend tradition with progressive governance.

As Oba Ladoja takes his place among the revered custodians of Ibadan’s heritage, the city stands poised to embrace a future rooted in its rich past.
