From Puff-Puff Seller to Government Chef: Oluwatosin Adejumo’s Unexpected Journey
In a heartwarming twist of fate, Oluwatosin Adejumo, a 30-year-old graduate of Home Economics with a Nigerian Certificate in Education, found herself transitioning from street vendor to government chef, thanks to a chance encounter with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Oluwatosin’s
story is one of resilience and quiet determination. After losing her mother,
she struggled to continue her education and turned to selling puff-puff to make
ends meet. With support from a mother figure and suppliers who extended credit,
she built a modest business that sustained her through difficult times.
Her
breakthrough came during a solidarity walk in Osun State. As Governor Adeleke
passed by, Oluwatosin joined the crowd in celebration, calling out “Imole” in
support. The governor noticed her enthusiasm and approached her. After
purchasing all the puff-puff she had prepared and gifting her ₦50,000, he asked
a simple but life-changing question: “Are you a graduate?” When she replied
yes, he immediately handed her over to the Commissioner of Affairs and
Protocol.
That
moment marked a turning point. Governor Adeleke announced that Oluwatosin would
no longer rely on puff-puff sales for survival. Instead, she was appointed as a
chef at the Osun State Government House, a role that not only recognized her
qualifications but also validated her perseverance.
Oluwatosin’s
story has since inspired many across Nigeria, serving as a reminder that
sometimes, recognition and opportunity come when least expected, and that one’s
background need not define one’s future.
