Mob Justice in Abuja: Tragedy Unfolds as Touts Set Ablaze After Fatal Accident
A
harrowing incident unfolded in the Mabushi area of Abuja on Wednesday,
September 3, 2025, when three park touts, locally known as "agberos",
were set ablaze by an enraged mob following a fatal accident that claimed the
lives of a man, his wife, and their son.
The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) authorities to crack down on touting and extortion practices linked to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
According
to eyewitness accounts, the family was driving through the Mabushi Bridge after
purchasing a new refrigerator when they were accosted by three touts. In a bid
to extort money, the touts allegedly forced their way into the vehicle and
began struggling with the driver for control of the steering wheel. The
altercation led to the vehicle crashing into a bridge pillar and plunging into
a drainage channel. All three occupants of the car died instantly, and a nearby
parked taxi was also severely damaged in the collision.
The chaos
that followed was swift and brutal. Passersby, incensed by the senseless loss
of life, descended on the touts. One was reportedly lynched on the spot, while
the other two were critically injured and later rushed to the National
Hospital. However, in a disturbing video obtained by Sahara Reporters, all
three suspects were seen lying on the ground before an unidentified individual
doused them with petrol and set them on fire. The footage captured voices
calling on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to intervene and ban AMAC touts from
operating in the capital, citing repeated incidents of harassment and violence.
The
incident has reignited public frustration over the unchecked activities of
touts in Abuja. Residents expressed anger and grief, with one local, Moses,
lamenting, “Abuja citizens are tired of ‘Agberos’ and they should be flushed
from the society. Now, a family of three is gone. Are you saying I should have
a car and still pay for a commercial vehicle to transport my things?”
Despite
the gravity of the situation, the FCT Police Command has yet to release an
official statement regarding either the fatal accident or the mob action. The
silence has further fueled public demand for accountability and reform.
As Abuja
grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the incident stands as a grim
reminder of the dangers posed by lawless extortion and the volatile
consequences of mob justice.
-UPDATES-
In the
immediate aftermath, one of the touts was lynched by a furious mob, while two
others were critically injured and taken to the National Hospital. However,
disturbing footage later surfaced showing all three suspects lying on the
ground before being doused in petrol and set ablaze by an unidentified
individual.
There’s
been a growing chorus of voices demanding action from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike
to ban AMAC touts from operating in Abuja. Residents have expressed deep
frustration over repeated incidents of harassment and violence linked to these
individuals. One witness stated, “This is what AMAC agberos have caused here in
Abuja. They are causing a lot of harm. It’s high time we did something about
it”.
As of
now, the FCT Police Command has not released an official statement regarding
either the fatal accident or the mob killings. The silence has only intensified
public calls for reform and accountability.
