Future Outlook for Nigeria’s Electricity Supply
The
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has achieved a significant milestone in
strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure with the commissioning
of new 330kV transmission lines in Edo State.
The
project, which links Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta, adds 600 megawatts of
capacity to the national grid, a development expected to improve power
evacuation and distribution across Nigeria.
At the commissioning ceremony in Benin City, TCN’s Managing Director, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, explained that one of the major challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector has been the inability to evacuate generated power efficiently.
He emphasized that with the new lines, more electricity can now be transmitted from generation plants to distribution companies, ultimately reaching industries and households nationwide.
Abdulaziz described the project as a
milestone in TCN’s ongoing efforts to expand and modernize the transmission
network, ensuring it meets both current and future demands.
The
project strategically connects the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to the
existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV lines, creating two new transmission routes
spanning 14 kilometers.
This
addition not only increases operational flexibility but also strengthens the
resilience of power delivery in the Benin corridor. Importantly, it enhances
TCN’s ability to evacuate electricity generated by key plants such as the Azura
Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, thereby reducing
transmission bottlenecks and improving system reliability.
Beyond
technical improvements, the project also carries socio-economic significance.
The traditional ruler of Ihovbor/Evbueka, HRH Fortune Igbinakenzua, commended
TCN for investing in the community and urged the company to establish a workstation
locally to create employment opportunities for residents.
The
construction itself involved approximately 14 kilometers of double-circuit
transmission line, supported by 30 towers of various types, including dead-end,
angle, and suspension towers. This engineering feat was executed by Energo
Company, whose Managing Director, Predrag Mihel, highlighted the technical
scope and importance of the project.
The
commissioning of these 330kV lines represents a crucial step in Nigeria’s quest
for a more reliable and efficient electricity supply.
By
expanding transmission capacity, TCN is not only addressing longstanding
challenges in power evacuation but also laying the groundwork for a stronger
national grid capable of supporting industrial growth and improving the quality
of life for citizens across the country
