NUJ Press Week: Calls for Responsible Journalism Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, brought together prominent figures from security, politics, and media to address the challenges posed by disinformation as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
The event was themed “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation” and served as a rallying point for reinforcing the role of journalism in safeguarding democratic values.
During his goodwill message at the event which had many in attendance, former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, underscored the importance of truth and fairness in reporting, warning against the dangers of politicizing journalism. He emphasized that the press must remain impartial and committed to facts, especially during election periods when misinformation can destabilize society.
Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, described disinformation as a direct threat to democracy. He urged journalists to prioritize accuracy and verification, stressing that the credibility of the media is central to public trust and national stability.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Samaila Mohammed Uba highlighted the link between media reporting and national security. He cautioned that unverified reports could inflame tensions and compromise stability, while responsible journalism could strengthen unity and resilience.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, assured that the police would continue to collaborate with the media. He noted that journalists and security agencies share a common goal of protecting the public and ensuring peace.

“As our nation moves close to another critical electoral season, the challenge before us is clear.
“To protect truth, defend democratic values and resist the dangerous spread of falsehood, propaganda, and manipulated narratives that threaten the peace and unity of our country.
“The media occupies a strategic place in any democracy that journalists are not merely observers of event. We are custodians of truth, watchdogs of the society and defendants of the public”, she added.
Speakers collectively urged the media to resist disinformation, uphold ethical standards, and work hand in hand with security agencies to defend Nigeria’s democratic process as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Still at the event, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council honoured individuals who have made significant contributions to media development and public service.
One of the most notable recognitions and awards was the decoration of former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, as Grand Patron of the NUJ FCT Council. His investiture symbolized the council’s appreciation for his longstanding support of journalism and his advocacy for truth and fairness in reporting.
Beyond Okiro’s recognition, the event also featured the presentation of awards to other deserving personalities drawn from the media, security, and public service sectors. These awards were designed to highlight the role of individuals who have worked to strengthen democratic governance, uphold press freedom, and promote responsible journalism.
