International Workers’ Day, celebrated globally on May 1, was marked in Nigeria with tributes from state governors who praised the resilience and contributions of workers to national development.

The Federal Government declared the day a public holiday, underscoring its importance in recognizing the labour movement and the sacrifices of workers across the country.

In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates for resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.

He emphasized that this approach has fostered industrial harmony in the state. Fubara also highlighted ongoing rehabilitation of the State Secretariat Complex, aimed at improving the work environment and boosting productivity.

He acknowledged the stability maintained by civil servants over the past 35 months despite political challenges, promising that their sacrifices would not go unrewarded.

In Katsina State, Governor Dikko Radda assured workers of his administration’s commitment to their welfare. Speaking at the May Day celebration held at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, themed “Insecurity, Poverty - Bane of Decent Work,” he acknowledged the economic challenges facing the nation but stressed that deliberate steps were being taken to prioritize workers’ welfare.

Thousands of personnel have been recruited into education and healthcare to strengthen service delivery and reduce unemployment. Radda urged workers to reciprocate by contributing actively to the state’s progress, noting that a motivated workforce is central to sustainable growth.

In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia praised workers for their role in advancing his administration’s seven-point development plan, known as SACHIIP. This plan covers security, agriculture, commerce, human capital development, infrastructure, ICT, and governance.

Alia described workers as key stakeholders in the transformation of the state and assured them that welfare policies would continue to be prioritized. He commended labour unions for their cooperation, which he said has boosted productivity, and wished workers a memorable celebration.

Overall, the 2026 Workers’ Day celebrations in Nigeria were marked by strong affirmations from governors about the central role of workers in economic growth and social stability.

Their pledges of improved welfare, supportive policies, and recognition of workers’ sacrifices reflect a broader commitment to strengthening labour relations and ensuring that workers remain at the heart of national development.
