National StabilityDefence Minister Tasks Universities on Innovation, Cybersecurity for National Stability
General
Christopher Gwabin Musa, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, has urged universities
across the country to place innovation, cybersecurity, and technology-driven
research at the heart of their academic mission.
Speaking
at the combined convocation ceremony of Akwa Ibom State University in Ikot
Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Musa emphasized that the evolving
nature of global threats, from terrorism to cyber warfare, demands a new
approach to national defence, one rooted in knowledge, education, and human
capital development.
In his lecture, Musa highlighted that modern security challenges cannot be addressed solely through conventional military strategies. Instead, he stressed the importance of universities in producing skilled manpower, advancing research, and instilling values that foster national cohesion and resilience. He described national defence as a “whole-of-nation approach,” where academic institutions act as key drivers of innovation, research, and capacity building.
The
Defence Minister called for stronger collaboration between the defence
establishment, government institutions, and academia to effectively respond to
complex and emerging threats.
He underscored
the need for sustained investment in education and alignment of academic
programmes with national security priorities, particularly in fields such as
cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data systems.
Musa
advocated structured partnerships between universities and defence institutions
as a pathway to building a modern, self-reliant, and responsive security
architecture.
Addressing
the graduating students, Musa urged them to embrace discipline, innovation, and
a strong sense of duty as future leaders and nation builders. He encouraged
them to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s stability and prosperity, noting
that their knowledge and skills would be vital in navigating the country’s
complex security landscape.
The
lecture was part of the university’s convocation activities, attended by
graduands, academics, and dignitaries from within and outside Akwa Ibom State.
This call
to action reflects a broader recognition that education and research are
indispensable to national stability, with universities positioned as critical
partners in shaping Nigeria’s defence and security future.
