A fire outbreak on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026, completely destroyed a bungalow in the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) estate in Lugbe, Abuja.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, as the occupants were not at home when the blaze began.

The fire started around 7:30 p.m. shortly after electricity was restored to the area. Witnesses reported that the bungalow went up in flames almost immediately after power was supplied.

The building, a two-bedroom residential structure located in a fenced compound with a red-coloured gate, was entirely consumed by the fire.

Residents quickly alerted the fire service, and at least three fire trucks with fully equipped personnel arrived at the scene. However, many locals expressed dissatisfaction with the response time, noting that the fire had already been burning for nearly an hour before firefighters managed to intervene.

Despite their efforts, the bungalow was reduced to ruins, though the fire was eventually contained to prevent spread to nearby properties.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Residents linked the outbreak to the restoration of electricity, suggesting a possible electrical fault. Authorities have not yet confirmed this, but electrical malfunctions, gas leaks, and cooking accidents are known to be common causes of residential fires in Abuja.

Impact and Aftermath

- No fatalities or injuries were reported, as the occupants were away at the time of the incident.

- The bungalow was a total loss, with all belongings inside destroyed.

- Dozens of residents gathered at the scene, watching as emergency responders battled the flames.

In light of this incident, the Abuja Emergency Management Agency has urged residents to take preventive measures, including:

- Installing smoke detectors in homes.

- Keeping fire extinguishers readily available.

- Ensuring proper maintenance of electrical wiring and appliances.

The Lugbe fire highlights the vulnerability of residential buildings to sudden electrical surges and the importance of rapid emergency response.

While no lives were lost, the complete destruction of the property underscores the need for stronger fire safety awareness and infrastructure in Abuja’s housing estates.
