Nigeria’s Strategic Move to Tap Indonesia’s $1.4 Trillion Economy
Nigeria
is intensifying efforts to strengthen economic cooperation with Indonesia,
aiming to draw policy lessons from the Asian nation’s $1.4 trillion economy as
part of its broader reform and growth agenda.
This
initiative was highlighted during a courtesy visit by Indonesia’s Ambassador to
Nigeria, Mr. Bambang Suharto, to the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning
in Abuja.
The meeting, led by Minister Senator Abubakar Bagudu alongside Minister of State Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite and Permanent Secretary Dr. Deborah Odoh, underscored Nigeria’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy through private-sector participation and global collaboration.
Bagudu emphasized that Indonesia’s
economic transformation offers valuable insights for Nigeria’s 2026–2030
National Development Plan, particularly in areas of inclusive growth,
investment, and innovation.
Ambassador
Suharto reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to deepening ties, identifying key
areas of cooperation such as trade, investment, budget management, economic
diversification, and capacity building.
He
highlighted ongoing agricultural collaborations in Sokoto and Kebbi states,
growing pharmaceutical partnerships with Indonesian firms establishing
manufacturing facilities in Lagos, and plans to develop Maintenance, Repair,
and Overhaul (MRO) facilities for aircraft and maritime assets in Nigeria.
These initiatives aim to position Nigeria as a regional hub for technical
services.
Dr.
Uzoka-Anite stressed the importance of translating opportunities into
measurable outcomes, citing the strong cultural and economic ties between both
nations.
Meanwhile,
Dr. Odoh described the visit as a reflection of enduring partnership, noting
that Indonesia’s progress in governance, diversification, and public sector
innovation provides useful lessons for Nigeria’s institutional development.
This
engagement signals Nigeria’s pivot toward Asian partnerships, leveraging
Indonesia’s economic success story to advance its own reform agenda and
strengthen bilateral cooperation in critical sectors.
