The commendation by Comrade Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute for Sports, to the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel is more than a ceremonial gesture, it is a call to action.

At a time when Nigeria grapples with mounting public health challenges, the Chapel’s initiative to organize a Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference underscores the critical role of non-medical institutions in shaping the health consciousness of society.

Shaibu’s words, “health is wealth,” may sound familiar, but in the context of today’s realities, they carry renewed urgency. His insistence on regular medical check-ups and mental health stability reflects a growing recognition that public health is not merely the responsibility of hospitals and doctors, but of every sector and individual.

The conference theme, product integrity, regulatory compliance, and safety standards, touches on issues that have long plagued Nigeria’s health sector. Counterfeit drugs, substandard products, and weak regulatory enforcement erode public trust and endanger lives.

By bringing journalists, medical professionals, and wellness advocates together, the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel has created a platform that bridges awareness with accountability.

Shaibu’s appeal to professional bodies like the Nigerian Medical Association to emulate this initiative is a reminder that collaboration across disciplines is essential if Nigeria is to make meaningful progress in safeguarding public health.

Equally significant is Shaibu’s emphasis on self-reliance and innovation in leadership. His reforms at the National Institute for Sports, introducing daily fitness routines and securing a certified marathon medical doctor, demonstrate that impactful change does not always require waiting for government funds.

This pragmatic approach, rooted in his experience as Edo State’s deputy governor, challenges the culture of dependency that often stalls progress in public institutions. His optimism about Nigeria’s participation in global competitions reflects a broader vision: that a healthier, more disciplined nation can stand tall on the world stage.

Shaibu’s tribute to journalists adds a poignant dimension to his message. By recounting how media courage saved his life during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, he reinforces the idea that journalism is not only about reporting events but about defending democracy and protecting lives.

In honoring the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, he acknowledges their dual role as watchdogs and advocates for societal wellbeing.

The conference’s inclusion of free medical diagnostics for participants further illustrates the practical impact of the initiative. It moves beyond rhetoric to tangible service, embodying the preventive healthcare ethos that Nigeria desperately needs.

In applauding the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Shaibu has effectively spotlighted the intersection of health, leadership, and democracy. His message is clear: public health is a collective responsibility, and only through sustained collaboration, innovation, and accountability can Nigeria hope to build a healthier future.

NIS DG, Shaibu Applauds NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel,

...urges stronger commitment to Public Health

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H. E.  Comrade Philip Shaibu, has commended the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT, for spearheading a timely public health awareness campaign, describing the initiative as both necessary and impactful in the current national climate.

Shaibu gave the commendation while serving as the Chairman of the occasion at the 2026 Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference, organized by the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in collaboration with Alliance Hospital and Dr. Physiq Global Health & Wellness Centre, held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Utako, Abuja.

Speaking about the conference theme, “Products Integrity, Regulatory Compliances, and Safety Standards – tackling critical challenges in product safety, patients trust, and public health protection,” Shaibu emphasized the urgency of prioritizing health in everyday life.

“Our health is critical, owing to the situation we find ourselves in today. It demands regular medical check-ups because our mental health and stability are essential to our daily living,” he said. “Whether you like it or not, health is wealth.”

He called on all partners involved in the initiative to sustain their collaboration, urging professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association to take a cue from the Correspondents’ Chapel. “All partners to this programme should not stop at this point. It is important that the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies emulate what the Correspondents’ Chapel is doing today. You should also be part of it,” he added.

Highlighting reforms at the National Institute for Sports, Shaibu disclosed that since assuming office, he has introduced a culture of daily fitness within the institute. “At NIS, we dedicate at least one hour on Tuesday and Thursday to exercise, to keep fit. I’m sure you are aware of the progress reports since I came on board,” he noted, attributing his appointment to the foresight of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This is also an appreciation to Mr. President for his farsightedness in the appointments he has made,” Shaibu stated, while also reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey and his personal experiences during that struggle.

In a passionate appeal to public office holders, Shaibu cautioned against complacency and overdependence on government funding. “Leaders must stop making excuses and begin to think outside the box. We cannot always wait for government funding before doing what is necessary,” he said.

He revealed a significant milestone achieved under his leadership at NIS, noting that the institute now has a trained and certified medical doctor specializing in marathon races. “It took me seven months to ensure we secured a trained medical doctor for marathon events. He returned to the country just yesterday to resume duties with NIS,” he disclosed.

According to Shaibu, these reforms have been implemented without waiting for budgetary releases. “Yes, the NIS budget has been passed, but we don’t have to wait for its release before carrying out meaningful reforms. What we are doing now is a replication of what I did as Deputy Governor in Edo State,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s participation on the global stage. “I can assure Nigerians that going forward, we will be participating in all international competitions, including future World Cups. Only when we embark on services that work that Nigeria truly become better for all of us,” he said.

The immediate past deputy governor of Edo state also paid glowing tribute to journalists, describing them as the backbone of democracy. Recounting a personal experience during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, he credited the media for saving his life.

“You, as journalists, are the heart of our democracy. I experienced your courage during the struggle. If you had not done what was necessary, I might not be here today sharing this testimony,” he said.

He narrated how a journalist exposed the continued detention of some individuals after others had been released, a report that ultimately led to his freedom. “I may have died and been remembered as a fallen hero, but that story saved my life. That is why I am proud to associate with journalists,” Shaibu added.

The conference featured a keynote address by Dr. Abdulrahaman M. Huzaifa, while Dr. Christopher Otabor served as Guest Speaker. The event was hosted by Comrade Felix Ojo, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel, with Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, as Chief Host.

The programme also included free medical diagnostic services for participants, reinforcing its commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and public wellbeing.
