Obafemi
Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has explained the reasons behind its
decision to decline the request for former Labour Party presidential candidate,
Peter Obi, to deliver a lecture at its Oduduwa Hall.
According
to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun
Olarewaju, the refusal was not based on disregard for Obi’s status but rather
on safety, orderliness, and adherence to established procedures.
The university revealed that the organisers of the event, a student group, notified the management of the lecture less than 24 hours before its scheduled date. This short notice meant the authorities were unable to make the necessary logistical and security arrangements.
The
statement emphasized that events involving high-profile personalities require
adequate prior notification to allow the institution to liaise with relevant security
agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
These
measures are crucial to ensure the safety of the guest, the university
community, and the general public.
Consequently,
given the lack of time to complete these critical preparations, OAU could not
approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event.
The
management stressed that the decision was taken purely in the interest of
safety and orderliness, and not as a slight against Obi, whom the university
holds in high regard.
Furthermore,
the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, reiterated the institution’s
commitment to supporting intellectual engagements and hosting distinguished
personalities, provided that due process is followed and adequate notice is
given.
The
university urged students and the wider community to comply with laid-down
procedures when planning events, underscoring that such compliance ensures
smooth operations and contributes to the overall development of the
institution.
OAU’s
decision was rooted in protocol and security concerns, highlighting the
importance of proper planning and communication when inviting high-profile
figures to campus.
