The JointAdmissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially dismissed a viral claim circulating online that a candidate from Cross River State scored 394 out of 400 in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The
alleged result, shared by a social media user identified as @Onsogbu on X,
claimed that a female candidate named Okon Winniefred Sampson achieved
near-perfect marks across all subjects, including 96 in English, 99 in Biology,
98 in Chemistry, and 99 in Physics. The post quickly gained traction, with many
users celebrating what appeared to be an extraordinary academic achievement.
However,
JAMB clarified in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dr. Benjamin Fabian,
that the result was fabricated. Fabian explained that the slip being circulated
was created using a fake template and did not align with the board’s official
format.
He emphasized that UTME results are currently only accessible through a “view-only” method via SMS, meaning candidates cannot download or print official result slips at this stage. This alone, he noted, was proof that the viral document was fraudulent.
Further
inconsistencies were highlighted by JAMB, including the registration number
format on the fake slip, which began with “20269.” Fabian pointed out that
JAMB’s system-generated registration numbers do not follow this pattern, making
the document immediately suspect. He also stressed that other irregularities in
the slip made it clear that it was not authentic.
JAMB
urged the public to disregard the viral claim and rely solely on its verified
communication channels for accurate information.
The board
reiterated that all legitimate results are accessible only through its official
platforms and warned against the spread of misinformation that could mislead
candidates and the wider public.
This
incident underscores the growing challenge of misinformation in Nigeria’seducation sector, particularly during high-stakes examinations like the UTME.It also highlights JAMB’s ongoing efforts to maintain credibility and protect
the integrity of its examination process by swiftly debunking false claims.
