Lagos Begins Medical Screening for School Food Vendors
The Lagos State Government has launched a four-day medical screening and sensitisation programme for food vendors working in public schools.
This initiative is
designed to enhance food safety and protect the health of students across the
state.
The
programme was announced through the government’s official communication
channels and is being jointly organised by Lagos State Education District I and
Lagos State Health District I.
The
screening is taking place at Government Senior College, Agege, and has drawn
the participation of food vendors who are undergoing medical checks and
attending seminars on safe food handling practices.
Dr.
(Mrs.) Idowu Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of
Education District I, attended the event and praised the collaboration between
the education and health sectors. She emphasised that providing safe and
hygienic meals in schools is fundamental to creating a healthy learning
environment.
During the sensitisation sessions, health professionals educated vendors on critical topics such as personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, food preservation techniques, and the importance of regular medical examinations.
These
sessions also allowed vendors to interact directly with healthcare experts,
deepening their understanding of their role in safeguarding students’ health.
The
medical screening exercise is intended to assess the fitness of food vendors
and ensure compliance with established health regulations before they continue
serving meals in schools.
The Lagos
State Government highlighted that this programme reflects its commitment to
preventive healthcare and food safety awareness, reinforcing standards in
schools to protect learners.
The
initiative underscores the shared responsibility of education and health
authorities in promoting healthier schools, ensuring safe meals, and fostering
collaboration among stakeholders.
