NUJ-FCT Council Calls For Stronger Security, Accurate Reporting, Safe Schools

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has issued a strong call for urgent action on insecurity, transparency in reporting, and the protection of schools, stressing that the safety of citizens and journalists must be treated as a national emergency.

The Congress, held in Abuja on June 6, 2026, brought together over 500 journalists who demanded decisive measures to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture.

The NUJ FCT Council expressed deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity in Abuja and across Nigeria. Journalists urged security agencies to intensify efforts against kidnappings, abductions, and community attacks. They emphasized that citizens’ safety must remain the government’s top priority, and called for greater transparency in official communications to ensure that public statements match realities on the ground.

The Congress reaffirmed the media’s critical role in accountability and public discourse. Journalists pledged to continue reporting objectively and responsibly, avoiding sensationalism that could erode public trust. At the same time, they highlighted the growing risks faced by media practitioners, urging colleagues to prioritize personal safety and adopt security precautions while carrying out professional duties.

A major resolution was the renewed demand for the full implementation of the Safe School Initiative. The NUJ warned that continued attacks on schools and abductions of students pose grave threats to Nigeria’s future.

They called on federal and state governments to provide perimeter fencing for schools, deploy adequate security personnel, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, adopt proactive security measures to safeguard pupils, students, and teachers.

The Congress insisted that honest and timely communication from security agencies is essential for building public trust.

They demanded that official reports on kidnappings and security breaches reflect actual conditions, warning that misinformation undermines confidence in government efforts.

Beyond security, the NUJ FCT Council also drew attention to persistent water supply challenges in Abuja. They urged the FCT Administration and Federal Capital Development Authority to urgently address the issue to ease the hardship faced by residents.

The NUJ FCT Council’s resolutions highlight the intersection of journalism, governance, and public safety. Their demands reflect a broader push for accountability and proactive measures to protect both citizens and the press.
