FCTA PRESS RELEASE
THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: PRESIDENT TINUBU COMMISSIONS
RESIDENCES FOR FEDERAL HIGH COURT JUDGES IN ABUJA
…AS FCT MINISTER REVEALS PLAN FOR A JUDGES ZONE IN THE FCT
In a landmark move to strengthen the welfare and operational capacity of
the Nigerian judiciary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned
10 modern residential units for judges of the Federal High Court in Katampe
District, Abuja.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, June
17, 2026, President Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim
Shettima, emphasized the administration’s commitment to judicial independence
through the provision of a secure and dignified environment for judicial
officers.
He described the completion and hand over of the residences as a symbol
of the administration's resolve to uphold the dignity of those who interpret
the nation's laws and expressed confidence that the move would encourage
judicial officials to effectively dispense Justice without fear and favour.
“You cannot expect judges to dispense justice without fear or favour
when their basic comfort, security, and peace of mind are left to chance. True
judicial independence is rooted in the dignity of our judicial officers. By
providing this set of residential quarters, we are ensuring that our Federal
High Court judges operate from a place of security, comfort, and stability.
This project is a deliberate shield against vulnerability, a statement that
Nigeria values those who interpret her laws”, President Tinubu stated.
He commended the Minister of the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, for executing the
project and for his relentless dedication to transforming Abuja’s
infrastructure, stressing that the Minister has once again proven that
performance is the only currency that matters in public service.
He also reminded the beneficiaries of the residences that the investment
in their welfare comes with the public’s expectation for swift, fair, and
transparent justice.
Speaking earlier, the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, said the commissioning of the 10 residences for Federal High Court judges follows the successful delivery of Court of Appeal judges quarters just the day prior and added that the momentum would continue on July 7th with the unveiling of 20 units for the FCT High Court judges.
The Minister noted that he personally visited the site numerous times to
ensure that progress was maintained regardless of weather conditions and
further disclosed that the contractor has also been mandated to maintain the
structures for the first six months to preserve the buildings.
The FCT Minister while addressing critics who labeled him a "land
grabber" for reclaiming undeveloped plots that had been idle for 15 years
for the Judges Quarters, defended his actions as necessary for the public good,
pointing to the reinvigorated real estate development activities in the area as
proof of his commitment to national development rather than personal gain.
Barr. Wike also revealed plans to further consolidate the area as Judges
Zone, citing the ongoing construction of quarters for the National Industrial
Court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal judges, both slated for completion by
January 2027.
He added that the FCTA will acquire and remove nearby high-rise
buildings that compromise the security and privacy of the judicial quarters,
while also noting that a dedicated police station will be constructed to ensure
the safety of the residents.
The Minister added that the projects, combined with the extensive road
networks commissioned by the President in the Katampe District last year, were
transforming the landscape of the Federal Capital Territory and expressed his
gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to drive this transformation.
Also speaking, the Minister of State, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud expressed
profound appreciation to President Tinubu, for his visionary leadership and
unwavering support for initiatives that strengthen key national institutions,
noting that the provision of modern residential facilities for judges reflects
the administration's dedication to the rule of law.
She also commended the FCT Minister, Barr Wike, for his relentless
commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure across the nation's
capital, adding that the newly inaugurated judges' quarters would provide a
conducive living environment for judicial officers, strengthen the justice
delivery system, and stand as enduring symbols of a government committed to
institutional excellence and the rule of law.
In his remarks, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Honourable
Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, expressed gratitude and satisfaction at the
commissioning of the Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters in Abuja, exactly one
year after the foundation-laying ceremony, noting that the project was
delivered despite criticisms and public scrutiny.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the FCT Minister Nyesom
Wike for fulfilling their promise to complete the project, which he described
as a demonstration of commitment and effective leadership and added that
support for the welfare of judges will strengthen the administration of justice
and uphold the rule of law.
Executive Secretary, FCDA, Engr Richard Yunana Dauda, while presenting
the project overview, stated that the building of the 10 residences for judges
of the Federal High Court was in line with the mandate of the FCDA to provide
public infrastructure and buildings. He further clarified that the aim of the
project was to provide secured, functional and comfortable residential
accommodation for judges in order to enhance the smooth delivery of justice.
Engr Dauda disclosed that the full scope of work included the construction of 10 fully furnished 5-bedroom duplexes with boy's quarters, equipped with facilities such as a 150-capacity event centre, a neighbourhood shop, gatehouse, generator house with generators, general landscaping, recreational ground, perimeter fencing, asphalt cave roads, walkways, drainage system, electrical power supply, and water supply.
