Nigeria, China Explore Tech Partnership Through Youth Exchange
Nigeria
and China are deepening their cooperation in technology and innovation through
youth exchange programmes designed to foster skills transfer, digital
development, and stronger bilateral relations.
This
initiative was highlighted during the China-Nigeria Youth Exchange Seminar on China-Africa
Community with a Shared Future, held in Abuja and organized by the China
Cultural Centre in Nigeria.
The
seminar brought together government officials, diplomats, students, and members
of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to discuss expanding collaboration
in education, technology, and cultural exchange.
In his keynote address, Zhou Hongyou, Chinese Minister Counsellor, emphasized that China and Africa, including Nigeria, are committed to strengthening cooperation through practical engagement and people-to-people relations. He noted that this year marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, alongside 70 years of China-Africa relations.
Zhou
reaffirmed China’s dedication to supporting Africa’s development through trade,
education, and technology, stressing that “Africa always comes first” in China’s
global policy priorities.
Zhou
encouraged young people from both nations to actively participate in building
stronger ties through innovation, learning, and exchange programmes, describing
them as the future of China-Nigeria relations.
On the
Nigerian side, Despan Kwardenm, Director of Education and Youth Development at
the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, described the seminar as a vital
step in creating structured engagement between Nigerian and Chinese youths.
He
highlighted that both countries have large populations of digitally aware young
citizens, making youth cooperation crucial for future development. He further
explained that Nigeria stands to benefit from technology exchange, particularly
in areas where Chinese expertise can support local innovation, such as Virtual
Reality, digital systems, and innovation training.
Interactive
sessions allowed participants to share experiences on culture, language, and
technology. NYSC member Alhassan Yauza remarked that the seminar exposed him to
new ideas about Chinese culture and technology, emphasizing the importance of
communication and exchange in international cooperation. Another corps member,
Grace
Abiodun, encouraged Nigerian youths to prepare early for opportunities such as
scholarships and training programmes, stressing that readiness is key to
benefiting from international partnerships.
This
initiative reflects a broader vision of building a shared future between
Nigeria and China, where youth engagement serves as the foundation for
advancing education, technology, and cultural ties. It underscores the role of
young people as catalysts for innovation and cooperation, ensuring that both
nations can harness their demographic strengths for mutual growth and
development.
